alternator wiring help
I know this has been asked before. the more research I do the more confused I am. I have just installed a serpentine system on my truck. it came out of a 1992 k 5 blazer. I hav kept the plug from the alternator that goes on the top from the old harness. This plug has only 1 wire. the plug from my harness has two. which one of those wires can I cut and use with the other plug. Thanks for any help.

Re: alternator wiring help
The newer style plug has only a 12V IGN switched source so you need to use the white wire from your existing harness. You'll need to do one of two things too-run a HD (6ga or larger) to the battery from the charge post, then from the battery to your common 12V power junction or; run that same gauge wire from the alternator post to the common 12V junction then to the battery.
Re-route your existing red alt. plug lead to your common 12V common power junction. And as for that 12V switched IGN wire lead, you need to add at least a 10-ohm resistor in series. I think there may be an adapter harness pigtail but I would suggest using your stock wire-its better quality than the parts store crap pigtail wiring. The resistor you can find at Radio Shack. |

Re: alternator wiring help
Is the wire from the newer alternator just an exciter wire then?

Re: alternator wiring help
i always use a pigtail/adapter from napa for my serp set-up conversions in my g-bodies. it plugs into the old 2 prong style alt connector on one en and adapts to the newer 3 prong alt conector. napa part# ec82.they are 20.00.

Re: alternator wiring help
Yes, since CS alternators for the most part went to remote voltage sensing @ a remote 12V junction so there is no need for a red lead to the alternator plug-in.

Re: alternator wiring help
The long version...
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Wiring/Part2/ AC Delco makes two different adapter pigtails to go from AC Delco 10SI & 12SI to CS130 & CS144 Non-resistor adapters for warning lamp instrument clusters; - AC Delco: 8077 - Haywire: 2110 - Painless Wiring: 30707 Resistor adapters (35-45Ω resistor in sense wire) for gauge clusters: - AC Delco: 8078 These guys make an AC Delco 10SI & 12SI to CS130D & AD230 & AD237 & AD244 alternator. PN W1203 has no resistor... I am not sure whether the Advance Design alternators need a resistance in the sense wire. The CS series will not last more than a few months without it. http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/item...-Harnesses.htm

Re: alternator wiring help
Pink/black goes to brown.
First pic '92 second pic '77-'87. Both run through the charge light it's just on a different diagram for the '92.

Re: alternator wiring help
Thank you for all the help. I have got it done. Not very difficult or time consuming.
