I just bought my first project truck a 1957 gmc 270 v6, and I've found out it is pretty difficult to find parts for this year truck. Any ideas or recommendations thanks

Re: First project 1957 gmc

You might have to get your bumpers stripped, fixed and chrome dipped if you can't find replacements. Good luck!

Yep GMC grill and bumper pieces are hard to come by for sure. eBay and Craigslist will be your best bet for them!

Re: First project 1957 gmc

The plan right now is to get it running. And once it's running I'm gonna restore it but keep it as original as I can, but my paint it a different color don't know yet, and I'll post some more pics soon

I like your plan and it sure looks like from that pic your parts could be repaired for chroming. We need more pics and info!

Re: First project 1957 gmc

The front bumper and Dagmars are being reproduced, available on the internet- those one year 1957 style moustache pieces and center grille bar are hard to come by however I have seen them on Ebay on a rare occasion, pricey.

The 55/56 moustache pieces and upper center grille bar are more easily found and more reasonable, however they don't have that indentation/groove that the 57 pieces have. But- the 55/56 moustache pieces will fit the 57 with a small bit of grinding to fit around the upper area of the 57 center grille assembly.

It's what I did when I swapped to chrome from painted on my 57 Suburban since I couldn't find the 57 pieces. I actually prefer the smooth look of the 55/56 parts. Click on my avatar, only a 57 GMC buff with a keen eye would notice..

Let me know what you need as you progress on your truck, I've pretty much got all the parts sources figgered out.

Looks to be in pretty decent shape.
What rust there is should be all fixable.

Nice find ! Have fun with your build.

By the way the '57 bullets are 1 year only and they only fit a stock bumper so if you want chrome you'll need to have them repaired and plated at a quality chrome shop.

Here's a '55 and a '57 Palomino for inspiration

Also a pic of my dash for reference .

[QUOTE=G&R's57GMC;6954284]Nice find ! Have fun with your build.

" By the way the '57 bullets are 1 year only and they only fit a stock bumper "

Clarification : The '57 bullets are different then the '55-56 bullets ,

The aftermarket '57 bullets mentioned that they only fit a stock GM bumper and may not fit an aftermarket bumper as the contour may be off.

So using a stock GM bumper may be the way to go.

I have my '56 bullets off the stock GMC GM bumper and an aftermarket bumper for my other '56 Chevy . The two haven't been near each other, yet.
If I got ambitious the two could come together and confirm the fit .

Re: First project 1957 gmc

Actually, the 57 bullets are available online, they are being reproduced and are much cheaper than having yours repaired and rechromed. The 55-57 Chevy front bumper is the same as the 55-57 GMC front bumper. The holes for the bullets will simply have to be drilled to fit..

I'm at a loss as to what they mean here- stating the bullets ONLY fit a stock GM bumper but then say they "may not" fit an aftermarket bumper? Doesn't make sense to me. Where did you read this?
