Parts interchangability question

When I first got my 1970 Stepside, my goal was to get the 350 that was in it running. Well that has now snowballed into a fuller roller 383 with AFR heads and now I have decided to put a serpentine belt system on it from a 1990 Chevy truck. I have a new water pump and alternator that will not work with the serpentine system. I was gonna list them on Craig's list but was wondering if anyone new what all year models they will work on. The water pump is a short pump. Thanks for any info yall can offer.

Re: Parts interchangability question

Anybody know? Should I post this in the engine/drivetrain forum?

Re: Parts interchangability question

Probably...... My best guess is the the serpentine system is set up for a vortec 350. which probably makes them unusable on regular sbc's. but yes ask Engine n drivetrain im just a youngin that doesnt know much.

You cannot use the short water pump, you have to use a long one, "reverse rotation" because of the serpentine system. You also have to be aware of what bolt pattern your heads have, the trucks have different accessory bolt locations. That serpentine kit is not the same as the one GM Performance Parts sells, it has a different passenger side bracket. Not sure what AFR heads have for accessory bolt pattern, sometimes heads can be drilled "with discretion".

Also, only use the ones with aluminum brackets. The ones with steel brackets tend to crack.

Sorry, I read this too fast the first time.

The water pump will fit all older small blocks up to and including 68, provided they still have original brackets.

The alternator will fit up to 68 on passenger cars and 72 on pickups. There may be an issue with "external voltage regulator" or "internal voltage regulator" depending of if original or up-graded.

Same alternator will fit beyond 72 if it has "internal voltage regulator". As long as the application requires a small case such as you have (sometimes the case has to be "re-clocked"). Also, note how many amps your alternator puts out as opposed to the new application.

Re: Parts interchangability question

I think the OP knows the short water pump does not fit a serpentine system. He want to know applications for the short pump to sell it.

There's many applications during the 1960's. That's about the best I can do

Re: Parts interchangability question

You can buy Edelbrock Victor Series aluminum water pumps on eBay from $10. I'd put it on a shelf.
