leak from the cowl area..anyone else had this?

in the process of stripping my whole interior out to paint the dash and dynamat the entire inside of the truck i found some wetness under the carpet...so after spraying the truck w/ a hose for a few min i found a small drip coming from high up under the dash. I found a decent sized bubbly looking rust spot that was slowly seeping water. I scraped the paint away but the metal is still fairly solid. When i removed the cowl panel if found a small but pretty deep rust spot along the forward seam of the cowl w/ the strip of caulking along it that im guessing was the only logical place the water was getting into. The rust spot is on the same vertical plane as the hole for the throttle cable in the firewall just to give you an idea where....

just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it. So far the only thing i can think of is sand the rust spot on the interior clean and repaint it and grind/paint/recaulk the cowl area where its rusted. Im just worried about any residual moisture that might be left that i cant see or get too.

any suggestions?

I have the same little aggrevating leak. My body/paint guy said there's a seal that needs replacing under the cowl. I fixed it myself, I built a 3car garage now it never leaks

its in that caulking stuff. if it aint applied right or is just old it will leak. i had all that stuff removed on my truck including around tha door seams and the MORON didnt do it right. now i have rust bubbles in all those places. i would find him and find something to arrest him on but he is not hard to find. his crack problem already put him back. anyway, he dont talk to me , in fact if he sees me he walks away

what should i use to recaulk it? Im going to get rid of all the old stuff and start over. I dont like how the old stuff is dry and kinda dried out and brittle now. Im thinking some type of rubberized sealant? maybe somethin like rtv?

3M makes excellent seam sealer's for different applications. Find an auto body materials supplier in your area that carries 3M Products.
