Thinking about shortening my frame and have one last question.

I'm thinking about shortening the frame on my 71 and keeping my 2 piece drive line. The frame part I have covered. However, I was wondering if everone was cutting down the front drive shaft and rewelding it or is everyone taking it to a shop to get it shorten. I can weld it, I'm just not sure if it's suppose to be balanced or if cutting, welding and grinding down the welds are good enough.

Thanks

I cut the weld, shorten the tube and tack the end back in place then take it to a driveline shop and have them square it up and weld and balance it. You can do it without but a small amount of runout makes for a large amount of vibration.

It has to be balanced. I cut the one in my Green '67 when I put the S-10 5 speed in it but I have a little vibration at about 60mph. I need to take it and get it balanced. If you leave it unbalanced it's not IF it will come apart it's WHEN....

Not to my knowledge. There are so many variations it would be impossible to stock them all. Check with the local auto parts stores or any race car builders in your area. They should know who does it....
