Rust & Paint Removal

My hood is in pretty rough shape, so I wanted to see if I could get it down to bare metal and prime it. I had no problem taking the paint off the other body panels - using a DA, or abrasive pad or a flap wheel - I was able to go right through the paint and down to the steel no problem.

But, when I got to the hood, I don't think I'm getting there - it's really strange, so I'm wondering if anyone has had this -

Obviously it's heavily pitted, but I'm wondering if maybe that black color is metal that has been treated with something? I can't go any further, so I don't think it's paint or primer, but I really don't know...

Thoughts?

If the whole hood is like that i would look for a new hood.It would take a lot of time and products to get the hood level enough to paint vs the cost of a new hood.

Thanks, yeah I'm thinking about just replacing it. But i am still curious as to why I can't get down to metal on it..

Looks to me like the black color is metal, and the rust is in pits, so it makes sense that you can't remove it without removing a ton of metal. Strange that it's that pitted though.

You could use something like Oxpho in the pits to neutralize any rust left down in the pits, then fill with glazing putty, but if you're going for a really nice, long term solution, new hood would probably be the way to go.

I'm no body guy but could you take it somewhere to have it sandblasted? Would that ruin it?

Looks to me like the paint is laquer. Is your sandpaper getting clogged with paint? Sure looks like it's laquer
