Bracket to Relocate Alternator
I need to go to the tall valve covers which will require moving the alternator a little. It is as far out as it will go, which is not far enough. I have a 71' C20, with a 350 engine, no AC. What bracket has anyone used and where did you get it?

Are you running the short- or the long-nosed water pump? With the short pump, the delcotron is on the driver's side. With the long nose it's tucked under on the passenger side. Using lmc p/n [for reference only] the pass side alternator bracket set is 38-1872, the one on the drivers side is 38-1871 for the 3-point '67/'68 type or 36-2720/36-2721 for the simple "J" type.
I have a short water pump and use the "3-point" type. I got it at a local hot rod shop. Hope this helps and you're not confused as hell. Last edited by '68OrangeSunshine; 08-22-2003 at 05:14 AM. |

It's the short water pump and the alternator is on the driver's side. Sorry, I forgot about the two different water pumps. I should have included that info in my question.

March performance makes a nice set-up for what you want got one for my 383 from summit. I though it was a bit pricey for what you get in the kit but it looks good and appears well engineered.

check it out
You may want to check out Alan Grove Components, too. The March stuff is nice, but pricey.

You can also piece together some options with pulleys and such through Summit and Jegs if you want to save some money, but you want things to look nice. March is a last resourt and only if you have the $$$.

I am not sure what year they changed it, but the bracket (long curved part with the slot) that I took off a '72 parts truck was a lot longer (allowed for more adjustment) than the stock one off my '70. I had to use the '72 bracket on my truck after I swapped to Vortec heads and I used the GMPP adapters on the Vortecs to run old style valve covers.
