whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

So, what's the look you like.

Spare tire mounted to the side or underneath on a step side truck?

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

I think its a little "each to their own" here on pref.... I like the side mount on the earlier model chev trucks (particularly 48-54), not so much on this model. I have a LWB stepper and mine is underneath, which is nice if you like to have bed-stakes for example (another interesting question on their suitability for our model trucks...!).

Overall I like the look on yours and are happy to have mine under the bed.....

*completely unhelpful response to your post and deliberately did not answer the question....;-)

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

I guess the only advantage of bed side mount is ease of access to the spare. Most of the stepsides I remember growing up were on the bedside.

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

I also think that the full fender looks good too. If the fender has the cutout for the spare with no tire there, I think that looks no that great.

No it's an 8" wide rear rim. GM factory wheel.

I like them on the side, always have. You can if you want, put a rear mounted gas tank under there now.

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

Obvious for my choice.

To reply to the "stakeside" bed panels question, the sidemount spare would not interfere with that, I believe, except possibly a very little bit at the top bedside where the support rods for the spare mount are.

"Trim a little wood" in a couple small places, would be all that's required, if even that. The spare & tire mount bracket is all outside the top bed lip, except for the two of the 5 support rods for the tire mount.

As a kid, every farmer I knew drove stepsides, because they were so much safer for carrying a cow or two in the back. No wheelwells inside the bed for the cow to fall on & maybe break a leg.

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

I like them either way.

I could see the sun puttin a beating on the side spare...but the cool factor overcomes that.

I need a good 67 dr side rear step fender so i'm keeping my eye's open for either.

yours definitly looks great. and correct

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

I seem to see the older 50's-60's trucks with them mounted outside the side of the bed. On the 67-72 it's been about 1/2 and 1/2 I guess.

On the stepsides was there an option to not have it mounted on the side of the bed?

Yes -------- no idea on production numbers, & doubt it was even counted, but most that I see now are without the sidemount spare tire.

Maybe the farmers used-up most all of the sidemount spare kind.

Re: whats your preference on a stepside for spare mounts.

I like them all, in the bed, on the rear fender or under the bed, and if i had your truck i wouldn't change a thing.

But if you live in a rainy state you may want to have the in the in bed or under bed spare Vs the fender mount as rainwater tends to collect on that cutaway section.

I guess one has to decide if they like an origional look or a more sporty look.

I have always liked the full fender, but the spare on the fender would be convenient, and the look is growing on me.

I grew up seeing them there, but always thought the hot rod look didn't have the spare on the side......

It's no hot rod by any means, the look is starting to grow on me the longer I own it.
