Borg Warner Overdrive Rebuild Question

Hey yall. I've been lurking around here for a long time and have always found the answer to any questions without having to post. Except this time.

I need to get the shaft out of the tail section of my 3 speed overdrive to replace the drive shaft bushing. I think it is ready to remove but it must be a press fit. Before a couple of tons turn this into a pile of junk I wanted to see if anyone knows for sure there is no hidden clip or retainer. Thanks!

Welcome!

Yes, there is a hidden snap ring ... it's accessible after you remove a welch plug from the top of the overdrive case.

Hey Ray thanks a ton! I'd have ruined it for sure without the help.

Re: Borg Warner Overdrive Rebuild Question

The thing is kinda hard to get out. it's not just a piece a tin. I had to punch a hole in mine and pry it out. but it went back in just fine.

Re: Borg Warner Overdrive Rebuild Question

There is a step inside the hole that makes the plug a booger to drive out. I also had to put a hole in the plug and pry it out. Looks like it was replaced some time ago - that Dorman part number (P22S) isn't good anymore.
