The top trans is a Saginaw. the middle a 319 Muncie overdriveand the bottom a 318Muncie .

four speed Saginaw with the overdrive from a three speed Saginaw on it. I have a four speed sag and a three speed overdrive sag. Ive considered building one . the shift linkage looks complicated?

The linkage is from a NP 883 3sp. O/D from a newer 2wd. I just moved it up and fward to clr. the console and of course the O/d solienod. fun project it turned out pretty good. 1963 SWB

The top number is 3830210 - look closer. You can barely see the last 0, but it's there.
The bottom number is G1962. The G is for July. G is the 7th letter and July is 7th month, so it was cast in July 1962.

that would make it a Muncie 318.

I always called em GM 3. speeds but I'm pretty sure now that all the 3 sps 4 bolt side covers were Muncie till the fully sycro.. Saginaw.

Lug nutz is right. it,s a Muncie. Sag. have the numbers on the pass. side. heres a pic of the Muncie from my 63. looks just like yours

Remove the fill plug on the side and the drain plug on the bottom. Let it drain, plug it up, fill until it starts running out of the fill hole. It takes a quart. Pick up a small pump that screws onto a standard quart oil bottle to make it easier.

For the flush part, if you wish, drive it around a bit after the first fill, then repeat the process.

Finally, make sure you find the right gear oil. Look for GL-4 and not the "modern" GL-5.

How well will the Muncie 318 hold up behind a pretty mild 350? Only thing it has is a 4 brl carb.

I pretty sure the Muncie 3 sp. was the base tranny in corvettes forever. circle track guys luv em cause there light. but they don,t use 1st. gear. ie, the problem. A sport truck tranny without 1st. gear sycro is doomed or at least not much fun.

I did a whole rebuild on my Muncie 318. It's really easy. You don't need to flush them, they're just an open bucket with gears in them. the fluid just sloshes around. There's no nooks and crannies to flush really. Here's the link to where I got the flywheel off and started. I went with Redline gear oil for the replacement. it sure quieted the double clutching.

If you dont wanna rebuild it just drain it and re-fill it with a pump. Easy as refilling your tea glass.

I have a question about these trannys. So when I tore down my Muncie 318 I found that the outer surface of the 2nd and 3rd gear clutch was pitted/corroded quite a bit as well as the inner surface of the 1st and reverse sliding gear. The sliding gear is supposed to slide in the grooves in the clutch to change gears but they were frozen together when I opened the case. I freed them up and worked at the pitting with some careful emory cloth and they both look pretty good and they slide nicely by hand but I don't think I can get them to look machined quality again. Do yall think it's a lost cause to reuse these parts when I rebuild the tranny? There is no excessive slack when they are paired together.

As long as the pitting isn't deep and you're not running burnouts from every stoplight you should be fine. That's TOUGH metal in those gears. A little pitting from it sitting for a while won't hurt it. You'll wear any catches off as you use it too. I'd run it.

X2 it's so easy to change em if it does start given ya trouble. I'd be more worried about the bearings and countershaft bushings.
