off with the head

well ole dollor was skipping a little , had a puff puff puff out the tail pipe, and a little ruff idle so I decided that I had a burnt valve, last Monday I took the head off the big six and all the exhaust seats were sucked up into the head, check around a few places in Lubbock and you can't believe what they wanted to do a valve job, found a guy in east Lubbock that was a lot cheaper , so he has the head and should be ready by Friday. got all the stuff cleaned up and painted and ready to put every thing back together when I get the head back......took a few pic's of the head and tear down.

Yep. Have seen hundreds of those. Probably going to need some guide work as well. Pay particular attention to the front end of the head to make sure machining for the seat insert does not hit the water jacket. Have seen a few heads with casting shift where that was the case. Also, be sure to get some later valves to go with the harder seats too.

yep hard seats are the fix for this problem , was planning on using my old valves but the machine shop may replace the valves also. not sure at this time, I will check and see what he has done, would love for this head job to last a long time, thanks for the heads up on the valves....Don

I just did this on my 4010 LP Deere tractor. It has hard seats from the factory so I didn't have to do that, but it still cost $750 to go through the head. All of my valves were junk as well. Once he had faced them they had lost 1/16" overall diameter!

I sure am glad that ole dollor is not a 4010 john deere ..that would hurt the pocket book, but it sure does make them run better.

Chevy changed the valves at the same time they started induction hardening the exhaust seats - '72-'73. The older valves have a rounded dish shaped indentation in the end. The later style have a more a flat indentation with a sharp lip. I had a whole box of used valves to give cash strapped customers when they changed over.

Might as well shave the head while you are at it. and bump up the compression, get some headers, a dual carb setup would be nice also and........sorry I get carried away sometimes.

got the head back today done and ready to go, in the process right now to get it back on and running , best $150.00 I ever spent......new hard seats and he replaced 1 valve , said it showed signs of starting to burn... I am very happy to find this place . get the compression up and it may be a whole new truck.... if I remember right the head torque on a 292 is 90 lbs. if not some one let me know. I will check later to see if I am right.... now back to work.

I know what you mean steelhorse it would be nice to make it a monster....but I just want to keep it going .

I think the driver side front is 85 lbs torque, the rest are 90 I believe.

I just had the same problem with mine. I got a reman head for 299 from Oriellys and was very happy with it. Has a 1 year warranty and it came in two days after ordering. I mention this just in case anyone was like me and very unsure about the quality of a local machine shop and was shocked to see what they wanted.

I think the whole thing including gaskets, plugs, coolant was under 400 bucks!

that's not a bad price for everything , maybe we will not have to do this again for another 45 years....lol

got my head back from the machine shop , and got it back on , took the two one bbl carbs I had and took the bigger jet and metering rod out of the old one and put it in the newer one , it was a 28 size jet and the newer one was a lot smaller . decided to give that a try and see what happens.

took a few pic's of the finished product . it sure runs a lot better , I think it was money and time well spent....

LOL....it works great when its warm in the summer , but I have to turn it back over in the winter...
