1972 GMC Grill paint

Tryed two options but they didn't hit the mark. What is the best off the shelf paint? Lookin for a rattle can option...great painters please don't hate me for that comment.

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

I can't remember what paint I used on mine but I did use metal etching primer first and the paint is still holding on tight after five years.

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

I used SEM trim black. In my opinion it is the best rattle can paint there is. No etch primer required.

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

No etch primer. Engine enamel has got to be tough. SEM is great stuff, too. This is how it looked a year and a half ago after painting in '01:

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

I would use etch primer of Bulldog if I did it again. mine does have one spot that came loose above the passenger side lights. But, like I said this was done in '01. I did a quick job just to get by a while. You can't see it, but the previous owner had used roofing staples to mount screening behind the grille. When I got it the screening was all tore out with remnants remaining along with a bunch of snake bites all around the openings.I have a perfect grille I bought from a member stupid cheap back when everybody was changing GMCs to Chevys, but waiting till I restore the truck...of course. Chrome is all dulled, too. I painted the headlight doors because there was some rust started. I like it better than chrome and think GMC missed their mark on the 71/72s by not doing the same. I'll be staying with that look even after the restore. I think I did those first with a gloss

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

Just ordered some SEM trim black and plan to copy Special-K's look. Looks good and I have some corrosion starting around the lights. I was also a Maryland raised in the western mountains.

Oh yeah? Where abouts? I'm in Mt. Airy smack in the middle, but roots are in Friendsville. Actually above town

Hmmm. Not too far away from your roots. I'm 20 minutes south of Cumberland

Down the South Fork/220 way? My brother is in Spring Gap just SE of town. Maryland is a skinny thing around there. It's about the region more than the state, right?

Close, on the other side of the river in WV. I go generally by your brothers place once a week. Down to Oldtown. And yes more about the region. That part of MD isn't considered really part of MD over there other than on April 15th.......

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

Grew up just outside Hagerstown but spent many nights wandering from Cumberland to Fredrick and everywhere in between! After high school moved to Martinsburg, WV with friends before heading off to the Military. That was 20+ years ago

Must be my where my love for the 67-72 came from.

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

Well I finished the grill and looks good. Had her out on this non rainy day down here in the south. Toughest issue was cleaning all the rust first which is the reason for the light bezels getting some black. Thanks again for the advice and pics!

Re: 1972 GMC Grill paint

Looks great! That really makes the grille pop. I agree, Gravityamp, I think it's what GMC should have done...at least in 71/72. Looks factory when you leave the rim/face chrome like Lerch did
