stupid question

My 11 year old daughter wants me to put my truck in the car show this year. She's helped me do everything to it & we are both proud of our progress. At what point is it OK to put my old 66 in our local town car show? Its far from being cherried out but better than an old bucket. Way better than when I bought it. I get people checkin it out at the coffee shop, on the freeway, hm depot or wherever, but its just primered. So, what is the consensus? Is there a line when you cross to decide? Like paint, or a motor or...? Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings.

Re: stupid question

dude, you are a winner without even a show. family ties that bind aided by this truck!!! i say rock it, both you and her get all the time you can with her... oh change that shifter(unless its a "locking" 4 speed) vise grips are for tough bolts and holding stuff, not shifting gears, i used a pair awhile back to switch my auto for a period so i know bout that... also put the steering wheel/horm button on straight and you should be good, oh and clean the inside, wipe down the engine bay air freshener, then you can have the doors and hood open at the show!!!

Re: stupid question

I agree with pimpston. Your truck is nothing to be ashamed of at all. Looks better than a lot of the "show" cars around here. It's nice to see that she wants to enter it. Shows she has pride in the work that the two of you put it. That's not a bad thing in my eyes. Plus she might come up with new ideas for your truck at the show.

Re: stupid question

I totally agree, I've been sporting the vise grips for about a year, hah. I've got an NV3500 5speed in it. We have 2 months till the car show, I was thinking I'd try to shoot some paint on it but I still have some sanding to do & haven't been motivated. Prob should just order a stick shift for it, is that pretty straight forward to swap out?

Re: stupid question

Thank you both for the encouragement, I'm sure she'd love to do the show, we go every year. I just see all the imperfections cuz I've sanded every inch of it. Matte black/patina does sound better than primered

Re: stupid question

Put it in. I think you'll be surprised how much attention you get. Plus, you and your daughter will get a lot more enjoyment out of being part of the show rather than just being there to look.

If it's cool enough to inspire comments out in public, it's cool enough to be in a car show!

Re: stupid question

Let your daughter enter it in the show. Also let her talk to folks about it. She may have more fun than you ever thought.

Re: stupid question

When i put my truck in a car show more people were staring at a 64 must-hang beside the truck, but one guy came by who went over mine. He knew and appreciated what I had. Every condition a truck of our series is in should be shown. Your truck has a a lifetime memory waiting at this show for your daughter and you.

I used to be afraid of going to shows until a vehicle was complete. I missed allot of good times. Go and have fun! Nice truck by the way.

Re: stupid question

I always put mine in the show they have here in my town. I only pay the entry fee because the money goes to veterans but I park it next to whatever I park next to. People like the truck and like seeing the changes I am making even though they are slow. Cruise nights are the best for me though. Maybe they have an under construction class you could enter into.

Re: stupid question

as long as they let you enter and you participate in the show to have fun, I say go for it. play it like vegas, dont expect to win and be elated if you get something. and if you dont, know that your entry fee went to helping them put the show on next year. dont be the sour grape guy who complains about politics or aligned friendships winning all the trophies and your daughter will pick up that good attitude too.

I go to an annual show that it is easier to pay the entry and park inside the show than it is to park miles away and walk in. this show only gives out 25 or so "best" plaques and my expectation is never about winning, just about having a good time. one year I actually won a plaque and it is just about my favorite award ever.

Re: stupid question

Tell the Know it Alls the same thing I ask them after they make a smart remark about our 64. " What Show CAR did you drive into the Show?" that usually shuts them up! Show it and let your Daughter enjoy it. I did that with my youngest and she's just as hooked as her Mom and I .

Re: stupid question

I talk sh!t at carshows, but usually only in response to someone who needs to be knocked down a peg. I've had friends bring out beaters just to troll idiots...the end result is usually* someone in a 4.6 mustang getting embarrased by a Country Squire Wagon.

Not to typecast anyone, but 95% of the BS racing thats ever happened with me has been the results of someone in a Mustang...go figure.

As far as your truck and your daughter; if you worked hard on it, and it makes both of you smile, then you have every right to bring it out to a show. IMO the only time it would be impertenent would be a Concour or Riddler type event where there are specific criteria that count. When my truck was stock-ish and a few different colors, I still got tons of complements.

Re: stupid question

Let me start with, I was in the mini truck scene for years. Truck shows all over the place and built 3 myself.
When I go to a show. The first thing I look at is the trucks that are under construction.
I spend 90% of my show time looking through these vehicles. I don't look at the completed trucks much at all. (iE trailer queens) the unfinished trucks to me are more interesting because on some you can see where the design is headed. And others have you guessing.
So you ask when is it ok to show a truck? I say day 1 is ok. Have seen just the frame at shows.

Mine will roll into a show just like it looks soon as it's able to drive. I don't build trailer queens.

Shouts out to Local Finnesse & Destrucktion Trucking Crew!!!

Re: stupid question

I'd say roll with it, People like to look at works in progress just as much as one that is finished, I personally like to look at them too. I take my ole fleetline and people look at it just as much if not more than one that's all dolled up....
