Couldn't resist: '72 C20 Cheyenne Super
Just finished the restoration of my '68 C10, but when I saw this truck, I could not resist. Was able to convince my wife that we need another pick-up and luckily she didn't fight too hard....she likes old cars and trucks, too!
The bad: original 400 engine is a goner, replaced by a now pretty tired 350. On the flip side, the doors for a LS swap are wide open now! Also pretty poor job on the repaint. The good: AC, interior pretty much complete and original, still has original turbo 400, and (and this is the best part!!) NO RUST!! Some surface rust here and there, but rockers, cab floor and corners are mint !! No holes in the fenders, either. I don't know yet if somebody fixed it when they repainted it, but I will find out, when I blow it apart and go through everything. Plan is total frame-off including LS-swap with OD tranny, suspension upgrades and big Wilwood brakes. Will probably start in the fall. During summer I need to drive the heck out of my '68 first...... A 558 Cheyenne Super is a GEM! Take a look around on the board for a few examples and you'll be hooked - it's a beautiful combo. I have some pics I will dig up unless someone beats me to it! I'd restore the paint to the factory 2-tone vice the blue/white deluxe personally. Almost a one of a kind truck there. Congrats on the great find.

Re: Couldn't resist: '72 C20 Cheyenne Super
I have good news (unless it changed post-70).
The blocks are not stamped with a serial number, VIN, or useful sequence number of any kind. It's impossible to confirm an engine came in our trucks, only possible to rule it out. If you can find a block with the right 3-letter code that was built before the truck, you can restore it as an original big-block. Best to disclose that of course, but I bring up mainly so that you don't worry too much about the original motor being gone.

Re: Couldn't resist: '72 C20 Cheyenne Super
Thanks for the kind words, guys. To be honest, I'm a sucker for the blue/white combo, that's why I went to look at this truck in the first place. I realized that it had a respray in non-original colors, but the overall condition just did it for me. No cutting, no welding and no grinding for a change!! Plus, I always wanted to build a resto-mod pick-up and this 3/4 ton just seems to be perfect. But I might look at some 558 Cheyennes a little more, maybe it will be growing on me.
And what if I would find a big block and throw a EFI on it.........hmmmm. |

Re: Couldn't resist: '72 C20 Cheyenne Super
It isn't original to mine, nor would it match the spid...but I'm tempted to paint mine that combo someday when I repaint it

Nice to see it got bought. I went and looked at it but didn't buy it was a super nice truck. My plan if I bought it was to make short bed out of it.

Gorgeous truck. I cannot for the life of me find one in decent condition up here. Gotta have that two tone.

Stuntmonkey start looking in WA & watch FB lots of classic car buy/sell sites. There's lots of these trucks around just depends on what you want.

Re: Couldn't resist: '72 C20 Cheyenne Super
Yeah I had one in Sumas, beautiful green and white one. Guy sold it for a $1k more than he was asking about 20 mins before I arrived!!
Have you got any good links to the sites to frequent? I just check craigslist mostly. |
