New title and plates

Just recieved my new Title and plates today. Theres a lot of title questions on here so I thought I would maybe offer some advice. I went on line to the state DMV and found a menu that I could fill all the paper work plus taxes and plates and print it all off to mail in. 3 weeks later a new title plus plates, no inspection or any thing else. I know not all states are this easy but take a look at your DMV web site.

Thanks for sharing, I've seen lots of ??s on the site about titles ,

Was there any potential problems / ISSUES with yours ? Different frame ect.?
And Or did you have a clear title to start with ?
pre Vin # vehicles go by block serial #s as I understand it ,if yours is a 1950?

Here's how it went for me in Minnesota. When I bought the truck the owner had the cab card, (registration card) there was no "title" because the last time this vehicle was registered, all you got was a registration card. It had never been signed over to the person I bought it from, but the person he bought it from had signed it as the "seller". I brought the reg card to the DMV, and the young person working at the counter had know idea what to do with it. They said "I need the old title" I pointed out to them that the card said "registration card and title" on it. They went in back and got a more "seasoned" employee and before long, deal done and title arrived 3 weeks later. It didn't matter it was going on an s-10 frame. They didn't ask, I didn't volunteer any info. All of the paper work was based on the VIN in the door jamb.

As it is here in Iowa too. Truck came from Indiana previous owner with a '76 frame under the '55 body. Was titled as a '55 with the door jamb VIN tag.
Transferred to me as a '55 and then I replaced the frame with an '81 C10 frame. No questions asked as still has the original cab with the '55 VIN on the door jamb.

Every state is different but a matching title and vin plate or plate and proper paper work is gold when you start trying to title one.

This state and some others allow you to go "title purpose only" where you get a clear title in your name but no registration or plates. We call it going TPO here and that lets you have the truck in your name without having to pay tags or tonnage. Then when the truck is done all you have to do is register it and get plates.

The main thing is do your homework in your state where you live and know what you have to do and what you need when you go to title a rig and or register it.

Can't get a title on our trucks in NH. But if you buy it from a state that issues title then you'd better have a signed one in hand when you go to the DMV.

In Idaho you cannot do title changes on line, only re-registration. If you have a title the process is pretty straight forward, you just go to the office, no vehicle inspections, etc.

If not then the "conditional title" process kicks in. Here is a link in case anyone finds this thread. Basically YOU are required to attempt to find the last owner, contact the last state DMV where it was titled, etc. You then fill out a affidavit stating who you contacted and submit with copies of the search document you sent and received. You get a "branded title" which can be exchanged for a clear title after three years assuming no one steps forward to challenge your claim. This process DOES require an inspection of the vehicle to determine if the VIN appears to be legit. If it appears to have been tampered with then it is passed on to a investigator.
