1951 GMC Paint Question

I was wondering if anyone knows how many layers and of what color primer was used in '51. I have a GMC 350 that tells a great story, I'm just wondering what would have been original. I found this on the colors, but couldn't find any primer info. Curious how many times this had been painted.

Re: 1951 GMC Paint Question

Usually you can look on the firewall in areas that are a bit hidden and tell the original color of the truck when it left the factory.

I'd say that one might have been repainted a couple of times in it's life.

Re: 1951 GMC Paint Question

Look under the voltage regulator, lower cowl, under window rubber, anywhere a lazy painter would not do or remove something. I think factory primer was black for darker colors.

Re: 1951 GMC Paint Question

there are layers of peeling paint on the firewall i'm sure of it. i'll have to remove some items to see what the OG was. Thanks for the tips! Google told me that dark primer was used on hood and fenders, while the rusty red color was usually on cowl on doors. that page showed pics of early 60's trucks but after i wash the doors on the '51 i'll know if that was true on the earlier years as well.
