Power Steering pump pulley loose
The power steering pump pulley (Off a 72) is loose and pretty floppy when the belt is off. I can't tighten or loosen the retaining nut more than a few degrees. Is there a key in the pulley and or nut? How does one go about tightening up the pulley to the pump?
It's noisy (Squeaky and rattly) when the engine is running it. The noise goes away when the PS belt is off. Thanks, Tom

Re: Power Steering pump pulley loose
Pump pully has a key, but if it is floppy, then either the pulley is worn, or the pump shaft is worn. Straight shaft. As far as tightening the nut, it is most likely a lock nut and will be hard to turn. May have to replace the complete pump.

Re: Power Steering pump pulley loose
I just had the same problem. A new (different) pulley fixed it.

Re: Power Steering pump pulley loose
Look at it from above while it is running. If the pulley "wobbles" it is bent and needs replacement. Some are bent so bad they will throw a belt. They are usually bent because of improper installation/removal using a three jaw puller and a hammer.
If it doesn't wobble and just screams while running you need a new pump.

Thanks everyone. That gives me a few things to check.
