What is a rosebud rivet and what is correct for my 1970 c10?
I've got a '70 C10 that's got rivets that look just like the picture below (I know the VIN tag below is for a later model truck than mine). My dad has a '72 that has identical rivets and I've always assumed they were correct for my truck. I've seen threads pop up discussing the correct rivets talking about rosette rivets and I assumed that they were talking about what my truck has.
However, recently I read a thread where a pic was posted of a '70 VIN plate and it had hexagon shaped rivets like below. I've since searched eBay and found various pics of trucks that also had these rivets. I'm in the middle of a frame off on my truck and my VIN matches the frame in both spots so I have no doubts that they belong together, but it's got me scratching my head. Can anyone shed some light for me? |

yes those are rose bud rivets. I thought they were called something else? some have serations that radiat outward from the center hole. others do not. they are available through several vendors and on ebay. be careful leaving those rivets lying around. especially if your touching up the paint behind your vin plate.

Re: What is a rosebud rivet and what is correct for my 1970 c10?
I don't need any, my truck still has the VIN plate on it I was just curious why mine had the top style and I've seen pictures of other '70 models with the lower style.
I had honestly never questioned it, I searched but never found a definitive answer. Edit: Oh, and that's why I was curious if a "rosebud" was different than a "rosette." I'd always heard them referred to as "rosette" rivets but found a thread talking about "rosebud" rivets. Confusing enough? |

the other name for them is "Rosette" rivets, you can find ads for these in Hemmings motor news magazines, I think there is a Mopar parts dealer advertising them for like $50 a pair.....

You would need to check with your state if it's legal to have or purchase these. They are illegal in most states and the FBI has monitored their sale.

Re: What is a rosebud rivet and what is correct for my 1970 c10?
Thanks, but like I said my truck DOES have the rivets, they just look like the top picture instead of the bottom picture. I guess I need to take a pic of mine to clear it up.
Mine just have a more "serrated" edge, like my dads '72 has. I've seen pics of other '70 model trucks and they look like the sides are more flat. |

Your fine. Just tape off the plate, and paint around it. Dont remove it.

Re: What is a rosebud rivet and what is correct for my 1970 c10?
Thanks! I'd just seen them referred to as "rosebud" rivets in another thread and thought that maybe they were different than the "rosette" rivets my truck has. Like I said, I've seen the less serrated ones and thought they were different than mine.

They are different so the DMV guys can tell at a glance if the VIN tags have been tampered with.
