Need help with OG Temp Guage

How is the temp guage on the dash wired? I have a temp guage that my 63' came with that's after market mounted under the dash that has only one wire that's wrapped in some type of coil which runs to the thermostate housing which I believe is called.... This wire is the screw in style.... Does that also apply with the OG temp guage on the dash panel as well? One wire that's similar? Should I just dis connect that wire on the after market? Or is the OG guage a totally different set up? I'm asking because I want to use the orginal and stop staring at the floor where that aftermarket is at while I'm driving Lol

The aftermarket unit is completely different than the factory gauge or the warning light set up.

The unit you have plugs directly into the water port. (normally the head or intake).

The factory gauge has a sending unit that plugs into the head / intake and then wired into the gauge. Same with the warning light system.

So do they make a new plug in sending unit? Or there isn't any way I could use the OG one and have to stay with the after market?

Re: Need help with OG Temp Guage

They do make replacement sending units for both the warning and factory gauge units. Most guys who have warning lights add an additional temp gauge under the dash to not have to modify the cluster and wiring (as you have). You could do the same by plumbing in a "t" to where your current sending unit is plugged in. Basically gauge would come off one end and the factory warning lights sending unit would function off the other end.

I'd remove the one on the cluster and replace with factory parts. Now with whats been done to your cluster.....you'd have to get a parts cluster to replace the piece that's been cut out to install the gauge. The clusters are readily available and I may even have one I can send to help you out with.....I can check tonight. The wiring is probably still there for the warning light system. Pics of the driver side of the block would help also to see how the gauge has been plumbed in. If not, we have plenty of wiring diagrams and its pretty straight forward to reinstall the warning light and move your gauge down to underdash or wherever you'd like it placed.

Is this on a v8 or straight 6 engine?

Re: Need help with OG Temp Guage

Stay with the OG gauge -it's better- but be sure to get the correct sender for the `63. There are some that work but only the right one will read correctly.

Never mind...I see now you don't have an OG gauge it's a SW.

Pics of both units....1st is the factory gauge...2nd is warning lights.

Classic industries, brothers, lmc, classic parts, truck shop, Tim tygerts.....all the usual suppliers should have them. Or just go to the local Napa, advance...etc, and do not apply Teflon tape when installing. They go in just as they are or you'll get false readings.

These senders install into the thermostat housing?
