79 manual to power steering

I have a 79 short bed that I am going to be changing from manual to power steering. I have the gear box and pitman arm to do so was just wondering if I need an adapter plate? I have seen them for sale on CPP but was not sure if it is a must. TIA.

Hey angelo what year box are you putting in? The reason I ask is because I have one from a 73 and now I think it might be the wrong power steering gear. Let me know how your install goes thanks

I'm looking at a couple different options right now I have a buddy who has one off an 81 or 82 and also have a friend who has one off of an 85 suburban. I'm hoping to get to work as soon as i get home from vacation. I will let you know.

Re: 79 manual to power steering

Aren't all power steering boxes the same well into the '90's? I am using one from a'90 van which bolted right up and used the pitman for a '79. All a direct fit.

Re: 79 manual to power steering

got my steering box in finally and what a difference. The manual box was worn out with a inch slop in wheel. I have tamed the beast but steering wheel is canted still though with power steering pump. Do I just pull wheel off and place it back on? Good luck Angelo with mounting power steering pump

Re: 79 manual to power steering

Hey sorry for the delay on this. I have had zero time to get any work done lately but I ended up selling the truck I was going to replace the gear box on and got a frame with one so little less work to do. Yours is lookin good though 79.
