Re: 9/16 lug nut torque?

The chart I Googled didn't go back to older trucks, but under Not Listed (near bottom of chart) it shows 140# for 9/16" lugs. Gotta be better info out there but I didn't find it...

Re: 9/16 lug nut torque?

Yea Discount was the place that snapped it off, as soon as they said 140 ft lbs i about shat a brick.. i believe i also used 110-115 last time i did it myself.. i told them on the spot after it happened i would never have gone past 120.

Now my concern is this, if it was tight enough to snap one off whats the chance that they just elongated all my brand new studs and brand new mag lug nuts? I just parked the truck when i got home and have a full plate tomorrow but i want to back them all off and retorque to about 110 asap.

The store manager said they would pay for the repair but if course i'm out my truck for a while and getting rides to places or back home is a pita during the week, plus who to trust, they wanted me to take the thing to Apex but the last time i let Apex touch my dakota it was a disaster. I could just do it myself but i doubt they would pay for that.

Re: 9/16 lug nut torque?

Maximum torque and clamping force on a 9/16" nut is obtained closer to 160lbs. That's if the stud/nut is of high enough grade. Was this a new stud?

There's a cool app called iengineer that list all sorts of information about threaded fasteners

Re: 9/16 lug nut torque?

I hand torque my lug nut with a torque wrench. Cars I use 110 lb-ft and trucks I use 120 lb-ft. I also put some white grease on the stud. The lubricity give me more tension for the same torque reading, and my lug nut do not rust in place.

In Indianapolis, I have found that the big tire guys hand torque lug nuts. In Cincinnati, not so much.
