Hood Pad?

I'm having problems locating a replacement hood pad. This would be the piece that sits between the underside of the hood and the hood brace. I sand blasted the hood 20 years ago and so I cant rememeber what the piece looked like. Any suggestions?

I might have seen a few pieces of a felt type stuff wedged between braces and hood, but I'm not aware of any liners ever being used OEM.

the pad is high density foam, there were 2 pads on my 58 hood brace
i replaced them with 2'' wide self adhesive weatherstripping, it was a little stiffer than norm foam weatherstrip

best pic i can find of the lower pad, it measures 2x3x.5

Ogre, were these a Stock Item? as i have never seen them on any of the hoods i have removed.
Love that Yellow by the way, and can't wait to get some Corvette Yellow on my Cameo!

So, will I have to remove the cross brace, lay the weatherstripping down then reattach the cross brace?

The pads were on all hood braces to keep the hood from flexing while driving. The material was a horse hair fiber blend that was coated with some type of asphalt product. They often fell out or got so stuck on you had to chip them off. Its the same material the AD's have in the back cab braces.

I think you could get pretty authentic with some of the roofing stuff that some of the guys have used for cab insulation.

Mine had a long rubber/felt pad, see photo. It dampens the noise and prevents oil canning.

mine were rubber too, hard and brittle but definitely old foam rubber
58-9 may be different than the 55-7 trucks

i sort of wish i had used a long piece to replace the 2 pads
around 75 mph the whole hood starts to move and flex
i should get a video, you'll wonder why the paint is still on there

i wouldn't unbolt the x-brace just the brace above it, though i had everything apart for paint

That's a Good Heads Up Ogre, i will make sure i extend what ever i use on my 58 & 9 Hoods.

I'm not sure how underhood temp on a hot day would compare to roof sitting in the sun all day temp. Is there any chance roofing underlayment might bleed or weep when hot and leave black streaks or drips on the paint?

You might be able to get some strips of linoleum and glue them together to obtain the right thickness. If you paint the floor side black and install the strip so the paint is showing it may look close enough for a street truck.

Are your hood hinges just painted or are they powder coated? Of course '55-'57 hinges like mine are different but I ask because I notice your springs are black whereas the hinge itself is silver. I'm wondering if that was because you didn't want to weaken the springs by the heat of the powder coating?

Unless you are going for an "original material look" I go with something like Ogre used to keep the vibration down. You probably already have some on a shelf somewhere from some other project.

I think i might have a Solution as to what i will use, I am in the Millwork Industry
and sell Prehung doors and their is a Product called Q-Lon and it is a Vinyl with foam
weatherstrip and they offer a Corner seal pad (Foam Wedge) and you can crumple this stuff up and it has a built in memory that retains its shape.
The wedges come in a Bronze Vinyl with self stick and are about 1/4" x 2"x 2"
I will try to post a pic when i can.

I have some horse trailer flooring that is high density 1/2" thick rubber I have been using for isolation. I got mine at a local farm store, it comes in a roll so I had them cut off a 6" section, I think 5' wide. I would be leary of anything that has asphalt or a hydrocarbon base because of "melting" and fire potential. Same with low density plastics.

The Q-Lon wedges that i described are Fire Rated for a 20-Minute (Garage to House) Door,
and i think would take allot of heat and would not melt or be a fire hazard under the hood.

My '55 2nd has no center hood brace, just the cross X braces. It doesn't appear to ever have had one, no holes for it? The hood oil cans badly when I open it, but no problems at hiway speeds. I just went out and stuffed some pieces of pipe insulation wherever I could, and it did help.

what ever foam you use make sure it does not absorb water; ie closed cell vs open cell
