Building a 454?

Ive been tossing around the idea of building a big block, not sure where to start. Im looking to get over 500hp on pump gas. Thinking of a 468. Looking around for blocks. Any reccomendations? Any advice?

This might help you out some http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/pro...g-block-build/ But i would think hard about a cummins swap so you can still pass a gas station if you want to drive your truck a lot.

Re: Building a 454?

If your building a big block you really should consider a stroker crank you can build a 496 for about the same price as a regular rebuild.

Re: Building a 454?

I built a 496 for my short box last winter and I love it. No regrets at all. If you sit down and crunch the numbers its hard not to go with a 496 when rebuilding a 454.
I used a Scat 9000 series crank KB Hyper pistons (Wish I woulda went forged so I could spray if I want down the road) .578int .578exh 232@.050 hyd roller cam and 781 heads with 2.19 1.88 valves and a little pocket porting. RPM air gap and a pro systems 4150 carb and a set of hooker headers for a chevelle. My truck hauls azz now. Biggest problem is traction. Getting caltracs and drag radials this winter so hopefully that helps.

I have a similar build as pistonbroke800, no major complaints.
