87 Burb Tbi sputtering problem

Ok guys I am new to the TBI world. I bought a 87 last year and so far its been fine, however yesterday I was up in the mountains, where it performed fine. But when I got back in the city I took off from a stop light and it sputtered in the mid-range, not like fall on its face but you could hear the exhaust stuttering. When i got home i popped the hood and the passenger side exhaust on the back side almost looked like it was slightly glowing red... I drove it today and it only seems to do it when warmed up and pulling off a 55MPH road onto a 35... then it sputters mid throttle..

Any ideas??

Re: 87 Burb Tbi sputtering problem

Today on my way home it started to do this surging after it was warmed up, about 8 minutes of driving. So i pulled over and shut it off, then back on, and it ran fine, all the way home about 4 minutes..... Im new to this TBI stuff,, someone wanna direct my path ??

Re: 87 Burb Tbi sputtering problem

I was hoping someone would see this and "know", I've had one TBI truck and never had any trouble out of it. Three things I see often related to TBI problems are fuel pressure, EGR valve, and the TBI unit itself needing a rebuild kit. Since you don't have any codes to guide you, I'd start with fuel pressure. IIRC, you need 12-14 psi for the TBI to function normally.

Re: 87 Burb Tbi sputtering problem

There's a little short fat rubber tube on the fuel pickup that gets weak and sometimes splits open. That is usually the culprit when it comes to fuel surging.

If it also backfires when it surges or just dies suddenly I'd be looking at the distributor.
