I bought my NOS grill off ebay for $200 shipped but decided not to use it since it wasn't as nice as my original grill. The NOS grills I've seen have more ripples from the stamping process around the headlight doors and the anodizing isn't as bright.

I've seen this many times where the quality of NOS stamped parts gets worse over time. Early production pieces look great all-around, whereas late production parts look can look terrible, NOS or not. The stamping dies obviously wear out with use which would explain the less than crisp form, but I'm not sure why the finishes are less brilliant. Perhaps it's deliberate because a sloppy stamping would look even worse if it was really bright. ?

The NOS grill you picked up for $250.00 was indeed a great buy. My previously mentioned 64-66 NOS aluminum grill did not come to me in it's original box. But I must say, I have studied it well up against the original one on my 65 and it looks extremely nice as far as the quality of stamping is concerned. My original aluminum grill in my truck is incredible nice and will stay on my truck for now. I happen to now the value of NOS parts, and I also know that the supply of these parts are slowly disappearing. So for that reason I bought the NOS grill when I had the chance. For my vehicles it's either very nice original or NOS. It certainly shows when you have someone walk up to your vehicle that has a very well trained eye. They seem to never miss a detail.

Yeah the finish not being as nice didn't make sense to me either. The NOS grill's anodizing was "cloudy" compared to my original grill. The original grill looks much more like polished aluminum, where the NOS grill had a faint satin aluminum look. It wasn't a big difference, but noticeable up close.

MacQuigley, the one in your link is a new reproduction (as far as I can tell; someone correct me if I'm wrong) which are often Asian made and are generally inferior to the original USA made GM part. They may look fine, but can be made of cheaper, lighter material, not fit quite right, have crappy finishes, etc.

A good example would be the new repro door handles I bought for my '66 a few weeks ago. They are made in Taiwan, and the original locks didn't fit in them even though the manufacturer assured me they would.

The grill in that ridiculously priced Ebay link is said to be NOS, or new old stock, meaning it is an original part made by GM in 1960-whatever, and has been sitting around unused ever since. Only problem is, the asking price is about $800 too high.

The nos one is aluminum. The repro one is chromed steel.That is the difference.

The last repro grill I bought fit just fine, and if it does rust like some claim I will have saved enough money on the first one to buy 2 more for the crazy cost of that NOS part.

Looks like it sold for best offer, my guess would be 900. Also whenever I look at a restored truck I look at the grill, it is always a repop because these NOS aluminum ones only come around about every 2-3 years. It is the icing on the cake if you want to be correct and pay attention to detail.

I just picked up a NOS aluminum grill for my 65, and I must say, they are getting much more harder to come by. If the grills prove there worth at $900.00, more will follow. Then we will see how many more are left to be had.

NOS grilles make the best candidates for getting reanodized or "Bright Dipped" . Taking a used grille in , well , it would have to be pretty much free of stone or sand pit marks as these marks are magnified and become craters after anodizing. Polishing them out before hand can be very risky making the aluminum very thin. I have many of these grilles NOS and like you guys are saying tooling marks are much more common on the later production grilles. Every once in awhile you get lucky. I took my worst one and had it reanodized , looks fantastic now. Still I believe the factory aluminum grille in a restoration shows the attention to detail by the owner.
