283 v8 replace
Hello,
I clean up my 283 V8 3 on the tree from my 66 C10 and see a big crack on the driver side. I think about to put a new 350 with a automatic transmission. But a dont want to change everything. I found an other 283 from 65-67 with the Number: 3862194 and the Suffix Code: CE 9A 31275. The Engine comes without cylinder heads. I think that i can but the Parts from my old v8 to The other One. A can Not decode the Suffix Code. Can anyone help ? Thank you verry much |

Re: 283 v8 replace
You can swap heads between the 2 283's if that is your question. You can also use the 350 with your existing transmission if you are not wanting to change that.

Re: 283 v8 replace
Yeah, you can switch the heads. Sounds like your original block froze solid or was over heated. Check the heads carefully. Since the head go into the water jackets be sure to clean the threads well, and also run the appropriate tap in the block threads to ensure a good seal.

Re: 283 v8 replace
You can bolt in a 350 in the same location where your 283 is and do not have to change anything, just the engine. A 350 is a small block just as a 283 is.

Re: 283 v8 replace
Thank you all for the answers. I think i buy the 283 and put my Heads, Flywheel and some other parts on it and try if it works. What tell the Suffix Code: CE 9A 31275 ? Only in what Model the Engine was place in ? The Seller of the Engine tell me that the Suffix Code was not correct. The Hub of the Zylinder is different of the Suffix Code. The Code must be "CF".
I dont understand that. I dont find a Suffix decoder. Thank you verry much Greetings from Germany Nils |

Re: 283 v8 replace
The code will not matter. It is still a 283. I would be way more concerned with your heads being cracked. I would have them checked for cracks. To much work to put it all together and find out they are pissing water in the cylinders.

Look here and see if you find the answer to your suffix code question:

Re: 283 v8 replace
Be very careful with a CE suffix block. that could be a 265. make sure it has a place to bolt the motor mounts on the side of the block. most 265s only bolted the motor mounts on the front. It would have to be pre 1957 to be a 265 I think. The CF would probably be a 283 but it is pretty old also. maybe pre 1960. How do you know the new block is good?

Re: 283 v8 replace
# 3862194 block shows as 1965-1967 283. Cracks in the picture look like freeze damage.

Re: 283 v8 replace
That motor looks pretty clean ? I agree the casting numbers suggest 283 65 vintage but from a pass. car. These numbers will drive us crazy. just make sure the castings are drilled and tapped for the motor mounts and that motor should work. Good luck I'm sure it's very hard to find parts over there.

Re: 283 v8 replace
I am a bit concerned with what has been done in the oil filter area. That has been cut and modified for some reason. I would check into that before purchasing that engine.
Otherwise, that does look like a nice clean engine.

Re: 283 v8 replace
x2 on that. Perhaps being in Germany the block was modified for another type filter set up in relation some sort of industrial or military application.

Re: 283 v8 replace
That oil filter is weird, but. In the mid 60's the nova/chevy II' s had a blk with a recessed oil filter boss. I never paid any attention till now but I think the casting numbers on that block could be one of those blocks.

Re: 283 v8 replace
That is definately a Chevy 2 block. It also has a steel crank. But unless the 283 is a lot cheaper I would go with the 350. It will bolt right in where your 283 is if you use all your accessories and exhaust manifolds. You will need to buy the gasket kit to assemble the 283 so there will be a little more cost. The 350 will have more power and the gas mileage will be almost identical.

Re: 283 v8 replace
Never knew such a thing existed until now. Here's one for sale with some more info about the oiling system in the ad:

Re: 283 v8 replace
I had forgot about the Chevy II Nova blocks. I've not actually seen one in person. In looking at those pics again, the oil pump does have what appears to be an elbow for the long pickup tube.
Nils, is this engine supposed to be an NOS 283 shortblock? It does have the appearance of a new shortblock with the pink paint on the sides and being very clean.

Re: 283 v8 replace
Good Morning Guys,
Thank you verry much for your answers. In the end of the day its a price question. A new 350 engine with heads cost in Germany 2500 - 3000 Euro without the intake Manifold, Card, Water Pump and the other Stuff. An good old 350 V8 cost 1000 - 1500 Euro. The 283 Block i will buy today cost 250 Euro. I Think I buy the 283 an try to make it run. If it not work I could sell it and wait for a good 350. I read that is a special Chevy II Block. Will my Heads, Oil pan and the other parts fit ? Thank you verry much again. Greetings Nils |

Re: 283 v8 replace
The Seller of the 283 tell me that the Engine comes from a "Opel Diplomat" this Cars have a chevy small Block (283 or a 327).

Re: 283 v8 replace
Now I understand. We don't see Opels in the U.S. Not The Diplomats anyway. They look like a cross between a nova and a chevelle. kinda cool. except I don't think they made 2 doors. They did put 283 and 327 in them. I believe they had 2 speed autos. probably powerglides. I'm gona say that motor should work. make sure the crank has got a hole for the transmission input shaft in the back end of it. and make sure your motor mounts blot on it. also a place for the clutch lingage bell crank pivet ball to screw in.

Re: 283 v8 replace
Yes everything from your 283 will bolt onto this new shortblock. However you will need to either change the oil pump pickup tube or possibly the entire oil pump. In fact if it is possible, I would install a new oil pump as well as timing chain and gears, cam and lifters.
