water pump replacement question

Want to do a water pump on my 70 c10, with 350. looking to dress up the front of the motor a but and saw a couple weaned water pumps. anyone use these? also is there a short and long water pump, and whats the difference?

The weiand water pumps are okay. Many people have used them for years. The difference between a short water pump, and a long water pump, is the distance between the back of the pump, behind the impeller, and the front face of the timing cover. Also, the short pump has a 90 degree angle on the water outlet, and the long pump has an angled outlet. They both function the same, and neither long or short has any flow advantages over the other, just mounting options.

Ideally you want the same style that came off of your engine, UNLESS you have some special needs. If you decide to choose the opposite that you have on your truck, you need all of the pulleys, and different mounting brackets for the alternator and ps pump, AC and those things.

Quick way to ID...

Short water pump will be so close to the timing cover that it may be touching, a long water pump you can stick your finger between the two.

also:

67-72: sbc for our years had the alternator on the driver side, they also had short water pumps.

73 and up: sbc had alternator on passenger side and had long water pumps.

Some of the aftermarket pumps boast increased water flow. This can either be a good thing or bad depending on your current cooling system. Moving a lot of water quickly may always sound like a good thing, but running water too fast through your radiator may not cool it down enough. If you have a stock radiator, a standard flow pump is probably what you want. However, if you have a nice performance aluminum radiator, you could probably benefit from a high flow water pump.

Ive been looking at aluminum radiators that have dual electric fans and aluminum shrouds all built in. Pretty slick look and would free up the motor some by getting rid of the stock clutch fan

Napa makes a high volume pump also with steel pump vanes instead of the standard cast ones.
