Headlamp bezel difference

What is the difference in 73-78 headlamp bezel inserts? Gray, black or all chrome. Why the different options?

Re: Headlamp bezel difference

Thanks. I wonder what the full chrome ones came on? I found one and am looking for its mate. And/or how hard it would be to paint it to match a colored one or remove the color from one.

Yes, cory d 's post #2 agrees with what what I believe was original for 73-78 bezels. That is:

73-74 = black
75-76 = argent silver
77-78 = dark argent (a charcoal gray color)

These bezels were first chrome plated and then the recessed area around the headlight opening was painted. So the all chrome ones could be any 73-78 bezel that's had the factory paint removed.

Re-painting them is fairly easy. I think the factory just sprayed right over the chrome. But on ones that I've re-painted, I lightly sanded the chrome to help the paint stick better.

Removing the factory paint is fairly easy too. Chemical paint stripper or lacquer thinner will take it off without harming the chrome.
