Caught the bug -72 K20

I've been a truck guy my whole life but never owned a classic. I have been looking for a 55 - 57 or a 67 -72 for about a year and a half now and finally found one that fit "most" of my criteria. Being fairly new to this generation of truck I was hoping for some feedback from you guys on what I have. It has some nice patina to it I think. Here are a few pics and also a pic of the Glove Box sticker showing the options on the truck. Thanks and I hope to be around for a while!

What do I think! I think it's awesome! It looks like you got a blue locking dial on one side and yellow on the other, is that what I'm seeing? Any how, you got original hubs that's nice.

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

I looked long and hard at this truck, almost pulled the trigger. Congrats - it is VERY nice and met most of my criteria as well: K20, Custom Camper, U01 lights.. (and the tach, man throt, etc etc). And, originally a white/dark blue truck was an added bonus. I believe prev owner painted entire truck inside out in a med blue. Was looking at it to resto, but it's also great as is. Congrats on a GREAT truck! What are your plans? Note that it's a Custom Deluxe, not a Cheyenne as badged. Personally, I like the factory custom deluxe cloth seat better than the vinyl cheyenne seat, even though Cheyenne is one rung higher on the trim ladder (this is why the cargo lamp is on the SPID also - if it were a Cheyenne, it's included so would not likely be listed). A few correct emblems will take it back to Custom Deluxe trim as I'm pretty sure that's all a prev owner changed to make it look like a Cheyenne (the emblems).

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

Thanks guys! I ended up getting it for a much better price than listed. I waited a few weeks and contacted him and he was willing to let it go as he had another project in the works. As far as my plans......I plan to chop the top, lower the truck 6" and paint it pink and white with the spinner hubcaps.

Just kidding....lol. I plan to just enjoy the truck as is until spring and then do as you mention Jocko....I want to get the truck back close to original condition with the correct badges and seat and get the saddle tanks functional.

Something that I did not find out until after purchase was it has dealer installed cruise and intermittent wipers. That's according to the current owner anyway. If these were not dealer installed or even an option then I will most likely remove those items and bring it back to original. I want it to be as close to original as possible.

I was pretty happy with the RPO list as well. The only thing I wish it had was the 402 and TH400, other than that I am really happy!

402 and TH400 weren't available on the Ks, so you've got the top o the line!

Ahhh, well very cool then. Gotta wonder why that is though. No big blocks in a 3/4 ton seems odd. Im sure there was a reason.

I've always understood it to be because of front drivetrain durability. These trucks only came with 44's up front. the Dana 60 didn't come till the mid 70s.
Never the less that's a really nice truck! Welcome to the best side of the 67-72 platform in my opinion. One can never go wrong with a 67-72 K truck.

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

First off, thats an awesome truck and I too saw when it was listed for sale. That option list is perfect for a 3/4t 4wd. The 402 was only available in a 2wd. Big blocks didn't show up in the 4wd line up until 76ish. Congrats on the awesome first classic truck

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

Thanks Guys....I am so pumped to get this sucker on the road and having some fun. I know my dog cant wait to hop in an go for a ride!

So a few questions maybe you can help me with

Z62 - Custom Deluxe and Z81 - Custom Camper
- What do those options offer above and beyond what the sticker tells me?

607 - Blue Cloth Trim
-Is that the houndstooth cloth or a solid cloth?

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

Houndstooth was a Cheyenne/Cheyenne super thing. Blue custom cloth on a custom deluxe is a cloth insert in the seat. I do believe truckseats can make the seat cover, he is a member/vendor on here. The custom deluxe package gave some dress up options such as the stainless trim around the windows, full foam seat I believe and a few other creature comforts. In 72 a deluxe would have had the chrome trim on the door panels but not the woodgrain inserts. The custom camper package I believe got you heavier rated springs, and some other suspension additions. Someone will be able to give you an exact detailed list from a period publication

Welcome - it's great to know this K20 went to a member. That's a great buy and welcome to the K20 club.

Post pics of the cruise control when possible - we can tell you if it's the GM accessory example or not. Should have "cruise master" dash switch if so.

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

here is the correct seat cover for your truck - as 68350 said, houndstooth is for the Cheyenne Supers. Doesn't mean you can't install one, but if you're looking for correct one - this is it below. They are great covers and a nice material to sit on. Not as easy to come by as the houndstooth super covers or the vinyl Cheyenne covers, but talk to Tim (Truckseats) and he can probably make one up for you.

EDIT: I almost forgot to ask - did you get the slide-in camper that was on it too?

Thanks Jocko for the seat info. I will be looking him up soon I am sure. I actually like the look of that more than houndstooth I think.

Sadly no, I did not get the camper with it. I am having to get it shipped from WI to MD and it would not have been worth the extra $$ to me for special shipping. After speaking with the owner prior to purchase, it sounded like it needed some work anyway. I am definately a camping guy and this truck will see its fair share of camping Im sure, but Im more of a tent guy than a sleeper guy.

What did jeffahart mean about the different color locking hubs? I see one is blue and one yellow. What does that mean?

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

regarding the hubs, normally they should match. blue and yellow are different spicer locking mechanisms, that's all. you'd probably want to eventually get another yellow or blue and match em up (probably blues)

c2: looking truck.

I ended up with my 70cst the same way - I was looking for a 53-55 and stumbled on the 70 C10.

Welcome and congrats, nice truck. The blue hub belongs on our years and the yellow was on 73' and newer I believe.

K trucks are a specialty addiction or sub addiction to the 67-72 addiction.
Gosh does that even make sense. I also chuckled at the chop top paint it pink (although there was a factory pink color offered but ice never seen it on a 4wd).

Anyways nice truck. Enjoy.

Forgot to add.... I was looking for a 58-59 4wd and saw a big orange beast of a 69 listed. It reminded me of my dad and uncle and I bought it.

Cheers

Re: Caught the bug -72 K20

Beautiful truck you have there!, I have a K20 sort of,a K10 that I put 3/4 ton axles under and putting cheyenne 20 on the side...anyway,( GMCGrim ) has a thread in the 4x4 section on this forum, he is making aluminum replacement hub centers in blue anodized aluminum for $155.00 for a set for the big 4x4 hubs you have, your truck has a blue one and a yellow one, you cannot buy parts for these old spicer hubs anymore, I am going to buy a set from him......I like the looks of those old original hubs better than any aftermarket hubs...
