Re: Power steering threads
GM pumps from 95 or so and newer tend to have the metric O ring flare. This fitting is also known as a "Saginaw Fitting" in some places. If your pump has this fitting it is most likely a 16mm version.

Re: Power steering threads
without looking... the return is typically bigger
hang on to your steering wheel when you fire up the motor if your hooked up backwards the wheel will go violently to one side even air in the system can cause unexpected movement

Re: Power steering threads
That is the pressure metering valve.
There are different ones that provide higher and lower pressure depending on whether you are running a recirculating ball or a rack steering unit. The rack will take about 1500 psi where the recirculating ball style typically wants to see about 2300 PSI. When I put my 57 together, the pressure was too high, and I looked up some part numbers at the chevy dealer, and bought the ones that were the lowest pressure for that style pump. Also, I am running a hydroboost. the pressure was too low for my brakes, and I had to go back up. My steering is just really sensitive with the higher pressure, but I would rather be rocking the steering wheel a little instead of looking for places to land. I also have the recirculating ball style steering box. The pump you have is called a GM type 1 The ones for the racks are typically a type II. If I were you, I would try my luck at finding a type II pump and bracket out of maybe a 86-91 Corvette since it was made for higher volume and lower pressure. That pump will work, but you have to fiddle with the spring pressure to get the pressure down. Higher spring pressure = higher pressure. you may be able to stretch the spring to weaken the tension, and then cut it back to the original length. I would try to get another spring so that if all else fails, you still have a known spring to install for a given pressure. The ones I was working with, one had a splash of purple paint, one had green, and one had white. I ended up using the one with the white paint on it. I remember that there is an O ring under the nut/fitting that screws into the body of the pump, so if you don't have it, don't fill it until you get one

Re: Power steering threads
Looks like it's the valve then Spring followed by 10.470 -4 then -5 then -3, are these parts available?

Re: Power steering threads
taking a second look at that diagram part 10.470-3 is on the end of the hose.
I spoke to the seller of the pump he said it came off his Hudson car fitted with sbc to Mll rack & worked perfectly, he just wanted the chrome setup

Re: Power steering threads
I'd be suspicious.
Looks like when he got his chrome setup that the pressure was off, and took the parts out of the pump he sold you and put the innards off the chrome stuff in the box that you got

Re: Power steering threads
I have two or three of those pumps. I have early and late. There's a steering place I know of, and I will get you their Email, so you can talk to them directly.
These guys modify power boxes to fix any sort of problem. They would be a good source of info if you want to try. Chip@powersteering.com

Re: Power steering threads
All you need is a steering flow valve like this one. Speedway, Mullins, Borgensen all carry them.
