Drive Shaft Binding
I have a Blazer witha 350/ T400. The engine was placed in the stock location with a trans crossmember off a 2 wheel drive. Also, the blazer has a 6 in lift. The drive shaft binds when the yoke is set into the rear axle. I had the driveshaft made to the correct length????? Any suggestions, answers, or drive shaft pictures of trucks with 6" lifts would greatly be appreciated.
Also, the distributor seems to be very close to the firewall...is this comon. The engine has HEI. |

do you have shims on the axles to correct the driveshaft angle?

No, I dont' Have shims. The rear is lifted with 5" angled block and 1/2 " spcer leaf. I want to eventually convert to 6" lift spring. Should I add shims to the already existing block. I think if the pinion angle changed and the axle rotated up, the drive shaft would work okay. Only concern is if it is enough clearance if the axle ever should lower from its location or get crossed up.

you might need to add angled shims to the rear axle...the axle shaft shoud be at a 2deg bend as it connects to the rear diff...

Can you get a pic of the pinion angle in relation to the tcase angle? Usually with a 6" lift you might get vibration from the d-shaft but not binding.
This might be a stupid question, but is the angled lift block facing the correct way. Meaning if it's backwards, it will force the pinion further down than normal. If you do decide to put any kind of shim in there, be sure to get one that bolts to the spring pack. With a lift block that big & then any sort of shim also, it wouldn't be all that safe. You would be more likely to spit out the blocks under torque. You might have to go with a cv shaft, but that would still mean a shim or something to move the pinion up more. If you can get a pic of your angles, it might help. |

I don't think I clarified enough. I also posted on the Blazer page, and the topic came up......the trans is a 2wd turbo 400. I didn't realize that the 4wd turbo 400 w/ transfer case is still shorter than the 2wd version w/out transfer case. The trans. I am using now is only temp. for a few months until I can get the correct trans/ T.C. combo and crossmembers for 4wd. Again, thanks for all your input.
