Fuel percolating....I need help!
Situation is this I just put a 305 in my 72 with as edelbrock 1406. Idles great and runs great until it gets warm then dies.. drove down street and back died in the drive. Could hear the fuel percolating in the carb.... how,can I fix this?

isolate the carb with a phenolic thermal insulating spacer .What intake are you using ? how is the fuel line run from the pump to the carb ? Any other changes made recently before this started happening ?

The motor is bone stock except for carb and headers. Just finished putting it in so its just. Started

Are you sure your timing isn't overly retarded? This can happen on long drives on a hot day with winter gas still in the tank, but shouldn't be something you routinely face on a test drive.

I think these carbs a very prone to heat soak. I run the same carb and after running my truck and then stopping the next start is often hard as the fuel has all boiled out. I plan on putting a phenolic spacer on before I put my truck back on the road this year.

It's not the same as the adapter. The phenolic spacer will help out. So this engine has the stock spreadbore intake on it?
I know you said your timing is "good"... but what do you have it set at? Gary

Use a 1/2 inch one. http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...1402/overview/ But You shouldn't be having heat problems this early in the spring. You said your timing was good. What's your initial timing? |

At least 12 initial.
Plug off the vac pot on the distributor when you set it. Slow down your idle after you set it too. |

Doesn't sound like timing is "good" to me. Sounds way retarded like I guessed. Bring it up like Geezer says to 10 or 12 BTDC (so long as it doesn't ping when all the mechanical is in).
You have vacuum advance hooked up, right? You don't have a hope without it, unless this is a full race engine set up for it. He says plug it off but he means (if I may be so bold as to assume) when you're setting the initial timing - you hook it back up after.

Edelbrock carbs are bad about heat soak. A plastic, phenolic, or wood spacer is a must if you run one, IMHO. Put one on my Thunderbird & had an identical problem to yours. Installed a plastic spacer- problem solved.
But check your timing, just in case. |

Timing and a plastic spacer should cure it, I had the same carb on my truck prior to the rebuild.

My buddy's Impala had a edelbroke on it and it would do the same thing when we were running it down the track. We used a two pieces of wood (little scraps) and taped the ends together so that the fuel like was stuck between em. Temp fix but it helped get down the track a couple more times lol.
