Generator swap to internally regulated alternator
I am in the process of replacing the generator on my 62 with an alternator. I believe it's a Delco remy 10si. I have already figured out the mounting but my question is about the wiring. On all of the 10si wiring diagrams there is a diode wired in between the terminal #1 and the ignition switch. Do I need a diode or will the charging light in the gauge cluster work as one? Thanks. Here are some pics of the alternator mounting brackets

With a light you do NOT need the diode

Re: Generator swap to internally regulated alternator
Yes the faq section has a very good write up on putting in a internally regulated alternator but there was nothing mentioned on diodes and it was being installed on a truck that came with an externally regulated alternator and mine has a generator so I wasn't sure.

Re: Generator swap to internally regulated alternator
With a dash light (not LED but actual incandescent bulb) there is enough resistance to prevent the alt from back feeding the ignition and keep the engine running when you turn off the key. If you do not have a dash light, then using a diode will prevent this.
I am currently using the diode method in two vehicles and it works great.

Re: Generator swap to internally regulated alternator
The "GEN" light in the dash comes on when "A" the engine is not running (but key on) or "B" no output from ALT (with engine running)
