Help on Steering column install
Looking for advice or maybe Im missing something. Installed an Ididit column in my 69 truck, it had a late model column in it, so i had to procure all of the original brackets. Well the problem is after i got it installed the column has a lot of upward play, about an inch or 2 or before it hits the underdash housing. It seems that the underdash U-bracket only holds the column from falling , but nothing to keep it from moving up? Should the U-bracket be 2 pieces to go around the whole column? Hope this makes sense. Please let me know if im missing something or do i have to fab something up to secure the column. Thanks again everyone for the help!

It looks to me like someone has modified the mounting area to raise the column up. The bottom of the rubber collar/sleeve should be even with the bottom of the dash so that the tin trim cover will fit up against it..... Could you post a picture of it with the rubber sleeve slid up out of the way? Here is a picture of the three upper pieces that hold the column in place. LockDoc

Re: Help on Steering column install
You hit the nail on the head lock, it has been modded and i think when it was re-welded before the column support arch was welded to high. i had to cut out a bunch of welded brackets from when the late model steering column was installed. The way i see it i have 2 choices, cut the arch down ad reweld, or install another u-bracket to keep the column from going up... unless another idea out there

I guess the only other thing you could do is to replace the brake pedal assembly bracket. LockDoc

your right doc , was thinking that but i figured i would try out a u-bolt and it worked out pretty good. Column is nice and secured. Down side is more bolts sticking through bottom of plate, but still need to shave some threads off and get as flush as possible.

As long as it is tight and none of the wires are pinched I would say go with it..... A lot less work than changing the pedal assembly.... LockDoc
