COPO codes

Saw a 71 C30 truck at the junkyard last week and it had a COPO code stamped into the ID plate on the door pillar. I have never seen one before, but it read "COPO-CF-71-108". Anyone know what that might mean? The glove box door was gone and the truck didn't appear to have anything special about it. Thanks for your help.

Any dealer could order a COPO...IF they knew the codes. Almost all the COPO camaros were ordered by dealers

Yes that is true ,,however "every copo order" had to be reviewed by Chevrolet Engineering Department and then signed off on the order,,,,,,,a "yenko" camaro is probably the most valuable of all copo vehicles,,,[quote]"you could only get those from his dealership apparently, few dealers knew about it.Only Yenko Chevrolet, Berger Chevrolet, Emmert Chevrolet, and a few Ohio based Chevrolet dealers are on record as receiving this option.[end quote]

Remember, COPO was aimed at odd fleet vehicles. This truck could have been baby sh!t green when new. That is all it took to get a COPO vehicle.
COPO does not always...and in reality, rarely ment hi performance. The few dealers that we all love to read about and search for there cars were just a couple in the entire system. And most dealers did in fact fill out an order for a small number of copo cars/trucks at one point or another...they were just fleet vehicles and not hot rods.

I bet some fleet vehicles would have had some odd delete options to save money

Very good oint Hooter. Like the fleets in Arizona probably had no heaters. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you could just ask for that on these trucks. (Desert Rat actually found a heater delete 67 cab out there)

From what I've read in books, Longhorn Man is correct.

COPO was the way to order 'fleet' vehicles optioned the way the buyer wanted them.

Because of the CID and horsepower limitations placed on the passenger cars by the Big Brass at GM...savvy dealers were able to use the COPO route in order to get stuff like the 427's installed in Camaros as a sort of 'backdoor', 'rubber stamped' way.

The bean counters and name takers at GM saw 'just another COPO order' (as in fleet trucks).....and we saw ZL1 monsters stuffed in Chevelles, Camaros, and Novas.

The honcho's were blissfully 'unaware' that the factory were releasing these nasty, snarling beasts on the streets......

.....which kept people like Nader and the Insurance man off their backs.

Everyone was a winner...if they knew how to manipulate those COPO forms.

Am I explaining this right, Longhorn Man?

That makes more sense that this was just a fleet truck; just a 71 C30 truck. All it had for drivetrain was a 292 and a 4-spd.

Sorry, longhorn man, no bed. The truck had already been pretty much stripped at the junkyard. None of the other trucks I saw there had decent beds on them, let alone a longhorn.

Tom, I had a 71 short step truck that had the "copo" stamping on the tag. It was a "GSA" or goverment truck. It was a special green color that was not a regular option color, and lots or really odd options, none that were neat though. (well, it did have a posi)

I would bet that most of those COPO's on the trucks were for a special color. Government agencies (road commission etc.), and large companies always did and still do order their trucks in their own color which is not often going to be a factory available color.
