Lifting a 2wd truck, 1972

Hey all, I've done hours of research and I think I've read every thread on this, but none of them seem current, or had a defining answer. So I have a 72 gmc c15 that I'd like to lift 3 inches or so, make it look like a stock 4x4 with a small lift. Could I simply add a 3 inch cool spacer on top of the coils like a jeep can do? The back is easy and I can figure that out, but could someone point me in the direction for lifting the front some, thanks everyone!

There is a good post in the 73-87 side using a 88-98 spindle. Thats the only way to get a proper lift

So you don't think those spacers would work?

I have been down the coil spring and spacer road and wouldn't do it ever again. There is not enough rebound left when you get any higher than 1 ton stock height.

Re: Lifting a 2wd truck, 1972

He said the spindles are the only way to get a "proper lift", and he's right.

Those spacers may work, but it's kind of a Mickey-Mouse way to do it as it messes with the suspension and steering geometry. Geometry become a big deal once you actually start driving the truck. It will begin to exhibit all kinds of odd behaviors like bump-steer and possibly even something known as "death wobble" if you don't lift it the "right" way.

I don't get it. Why lift a 2WD truck? I'm not trying to sound like a HATER, but it's not going to look right no matter what you do to it. If you really like the 4WD stance, then sell your 2WD and buy a 4X4. I get that it comes down to economics, I wanted a 4X4, but ultimately bought a 2wd because I couldn't afford a decent 4X4.

Re: Lifting a 2wd truck, 1972

My truck sits about 3 inches higher in the rear and if like to level it out and get some nice all terrains for it, not looking to lift it high or anything, just for looks, it's a truck me and my dad got from Oklahoma and brought to Michigan and rebuilt, and it only gets driven the 5 salt free months a year here, so selling it and buying a different one is out of the questions, just looking to build it to our liking, thanks for the replies.

Do 3/4 ton springs lift it at all?

Re: Lifting a 2wd truck, 1972

I put a 3 in body lift. Had to modify steering shaft, not to difficult just added two universals to double d shaft and got rid of rag joint which I wanted to do anyway. Also had to make bracket for clutch linkage which was a piece of cake. really gives it a beefier look and not so droopy. Puttin flat bed on eventually so didn't have to deal with lifting bed. The tires are 33s

I was wanting to stay away from a body lift, but you're right, that made a world of difference on your truck, it looks a lot beefier. That's what I'm going for, looks tougher, and it takes away the sag, thank you, I may consider a body lift!

Re: Lifting a 2wd truck, 1972

Thanks, in reality I probably got about 5 inches because I replaced the cab rubbers which were completely squished along with the 3 inch blocks. If you go this route try to find just the blocks somewhere. I bought a lift kit for a s10 blazer for like 80 bucks from summit I think. LMC has a kit for over 200 which is basically a rippoff. Don't really get on this site as much as I like, delay in response
