Re: tall shifters?
I had a lokar 32" double bend in the 47 with a 4L60E. it looked great sitting still but vibrated like a marital aid when the truck was running.

Re: tall shifters?
Ape hanger tall or just up at dash level tall?
As in everything else you do on the truck does a really tall shifter fit the total theme of the build or is it something for the mothbreathers to look and point at and holler "hay Bubba come here and look at dis one It has a cool long gear shift"?

Re: tall shifters?
When I bought my 66 it had a tall shifter & glitter steering wheel. First day I had it, on my way to register it, I downshifted a little too hard and it snapped the base of the stud off like a twig. Cruised it with a big pair of vice grips for the next year, and put the OG steering wheel back on.
Totally different set up on it now. |

Re: tall shifters?
I guess this is the only picture I have of it
the guy who bought it said he wanted a tall shifter, I had a 10" lokar in it I mentioned I saw a double 32 lokar lever on craigslist, just the lever and he corralled me to put it on, what a fun time that was. I will never change another lokar lever.

Re: tall shifters?
This was made from 1/2 galvanized pipe from HD. Took two chrome drawer knobs one on each end of the tee connected by a 3" threaded machine screw I cut the head off of one side, screwed them together. Everyone loved it. So comfortable too!
Now I have a big Elvis microphone on a long rod, I love it. Sorry, don't have a pic cause cab is off for rebuild...It is level with the dash, shifts great on my T5...

Re: tall shifters?
My '55 2nd has a 22in Hurst shifter with 4in extension. Shift handle is the one they make for Chev pickup trucks. Muncie 4speed is in second gear in the pic. When shifting into 2nd, my elbow just touches the seat back, and 1st gear doesn't require me to move my body foreward. Spent some time and money on ebay , and tried a couple of shifters before I settled on this one. I have several different shift knobs, I like the 8 ball the best!

I have one of those on a shelf duane, when I did the 65 I ordered two hurst sticks, and that one didnt fit, it hit the dash. that was my preference, but the other one worked well so cest la vie

Re: tall shifters?
Glad you liked it! There is a rubber shift boot at the base. The original t5 shifter stuck thru it about 1". I used a 1/2x3/8 45 degree elbow. Screwed the 3/8 end onto shifter in a vise with pipe wrenches. I mean, torqued that thing on. Then worked my way to the top. U can use different lengths of pipe and return the ones u don't use. The ones u do, put a wire wheel in a drill press if u have and polish all the pieces. U can grind some of the rough spots first. You'll get so it feels good to the hand. Nice thing is, you can shape it how you want. You just can back off. If you think you can go around one more turn, do it. Each piece should be real tight. It worked awesome. Post pics when your done and good luck...

Re: tall shifters?
16" Hurst w/mid - shift kit on a Tremec 5. Sits right next to my knee - perfect!
... tall Lokars are everywhere, it seems - IMHO, a tall or modded Hurst would look great & be a refreshing change - even with a slush-box.
