will this brake setup work for me?
brake setup
Will this set up work for my 70 1/2 ton? I have drum brakes all around and need some help stopping while I save for one of the aftermarket disc kits. If this will work can I keep it with an aftermarket disc kit? If It wont work does anyone have a setup that they would sell me?

Hard to tell how much difference between our trucks and the cars listed, as far as brake stuff goes.
For 125 though, you can easy find someone who will sell you a power booster for your truck. Just put a want to buy ad in the parts board. Then, you'll know it will work.

The booster won't work properly...it is for a disc/drum set up.
Whats wrong with non power set ups? |

My truck is extremly hard to stop I have checked everything I can think of I will change all the wheel cylinders next. Today I changed the mastercylinder and that seemed to help a little. I will put an ad on the parts page. Thanks,

Something is wrong then.
manual 4 wheel drums should stop fine. My 69 wouldn't ever stop either. Finally figured out the front brake hoses were deteoritated inside, not allowing the front brakes to work. New hoses transformed the truck.

Also, My pedal does not get stiff until it is almost alll the way down I'd say about 80% down before I feel the truck start stopping, and the pedal does not hit the ground (anymore)

New shoes are cheap, and replacing the springs and adjusters is a good move too.
While your typical drum brakes are not all that great, esp the non-power veriety, they are not as bad as many people will make you think. Just ensure all is in good working order, turn the drums when new shoes go in, and modify your driving habits a bit...and all will be good. |

I've got a power booster/master cyl combo. Been sitting 3 years. Bought new year prior (total 4 years old). I want to keep the booster bracket as I might need that. Going to 9" dual diaphragm, 4 wheel disc.

One thing that really help drum brakes is too get the best pads you can afford. I use the carbon metallic pads and they help considerably. Also make sure you have your entire system bled properly.

The brakes on my 70 GMC (non power brakes, 4 wheel drums) worked OK, but you had to stand on them with both feet to stop quickly. I added the power brake booster and kept the same master cylinder, 4 drum brakes, etc. I had to lenghten the rod to the pedal an inch or so. It works great now, just touch the pedal like a new car.
