Dome light door jamb mess
Not sure if my 72 Cheyenne Super came with door jamb switches but it has them. So when I open the door or close the door the dome light comes on or goes off accordingly. Pretty sure they are stock.
When I bought the truck a year and a half ago the dome light would come on when driver door was open but not the psnger door. That bugged me.....so I looked into to it. After some mystery work and reading on this site I figured out that the wiring was a bit of a mess down under the floor mat on the driver side where the orange/white (dome light harness) got ready to go into fuse box clip. You can see in Pic 2 that there is only an orange wire coming out of the clip. You can see a little nub of the white. IT should be an actual wire coming out...not an nub!!! In picture one the orange and white come out of the clip, but the third wire (white) is cut and goes no where....... Looks like my switch had been cut and spliced and effed with. I bought a new harness from Roger on the board and am going to run it as it looks like mine is messed up. Just want to clean things up a bit. Is there any way to add the door jambs (white wires) without cutting the main wires again??? The door jamb wires come from the switches in the doors out the kickplate on each side and attach to the white wire from what I gather. Finally in the third picture there is my old orange/white line (dome harness), a yellow/white wire, and a gray wire. I am thinking the white/yellow is brake/tail light wires and the gray is the gas sending wire? Please help me if you know and I will continue to search for the answer. Re: Dome light door jamb mess
There should be an orange and white wire coming out of the fuse panel from the dome fuse and going to the dome light. The white wire is the ground wire and the orange wire is the full time hot power wire for the dome light.
There should be a white wire running to each of the door jamb switches, and another white wire going to the headlight switch to turn on the dome light when the HL switch knob is rotated fully C/W. There should be an orange wire going to the brake light switch and a white wire coming off it, that goes to the steering column connector. The white wire sends power to the brake lights via the dark green wire and the yellow wire from the turn signal switch. Given all that: The top orange and white wires in Pic three may be the dome light wires. The middle two wires I can't tell the colors from your picture, but the bottom wire looks to be a brown or tan wire with paint on it. It could be the fuel sending wire. If it is it goes to the tank sender and to the fuel terminal on the fuse panel. In the first pic, The top clip could be the orange and white wires to the dome light with the single white wire cut off, that should go to the headlight switch. Does the top clip in pic one go into the top clip in pic two. The wire in tho pic 2 next to your pinkie finger looks to be a brown wire with a white stripe. Do you know where that goes? I have to go out for the day but will be back tonight to see what you have found out.

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
The top is orange and white and is for sure the dome light.
The bottom is a tan or gray (cant tell for sure) but I think it is the gas sending unit wire. The middle is a yellow/white wire and heads back in the same direction as the others. Not sure what it goes to. Maybe the cargo light that lights up the bed? |

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
In the 1972 factory Chassis Service Manual (ST 330-72) pages 12-33 & 12-45 have the schematics you need for both the dome lamp and the cargo lamp which were included as part of the Cheyenne Super trim package.
Since diagrams help too. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...3&postcount=28

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
Let me be more specific with what I have and my thoughts and questions.
Picture one is the pigtail coming out of the fuse box. Looks to be okay. Picture two is a short little thing that connects the fuse box pigtail to the dome light wire harness. There is a free roaming white wire coming off of it. Wondering if that is supposed to go to the headlight switch? Picture three is the current dome light harness. Obviously not correct because the white is cut complete off and the one Roger made and sent to me has both orange and white. I know what to do with the new harness I got from Roger. I am wondering where the door jamb lights and headlight switch lights (turn to turn on dome light) white wires tie into it all? I am thinking the second picture free floating white wire.... IF that is where they are supposed to connect, can I find just that piece in the 2nd picture? I am trying to get rid of all the electrical tape and possibly exposed wires you see at the beginning of the post!! Randy |

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
There are three stacked harnesses at play here on your truck.
The base build simply connects the fuseblock pigtail connector to the dome lamp harness. When door operating switches are added the new sub harness inserts between the the two existing connectors. When the cargo lamp is added it again goes in behind the door operating switch harness connectors. BTW I added a link to some diagrams to my last post.

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
Thank you for your help!! So that middle piece that is not cut up would help😳Is that a piece that is available anywhere? Maybe Roger? How does the wire connect to headlight switch? Is there a connector on the switch? I haven't tried to wrestle it out yet.....

I assume by cargo light is the yellow/white wire....it runs along the floor with the orange/white dome light and brown (gray) gas sending unit...... |

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
Seems like you are having trouble with schematics, so here goes.
On your truck, the fuse block pigtail male connector at your hand... Connects into what American Autowire calls... "Courtesy And Dome Light Jumper Harness" http://www.americanautowire.com/shop...jumper-harness Which in turn connects to the... "Cargo Light Harness" http://www.americanautowire.com/shop...-light-harness Which then finally connects to the... "Dome Light Harness" http://www.americanautowire.com/shop...t-harness-3564

Re: Dome light door jamb mess
As background, base build trucks had a manually operated dome lamp using the headlamp switch.
As an option (RPO C80) door operating switches could be ordered to add that function to base trucks. As part of the upgrade trim levels these switches were included. So any 71-72 Showing C80, Z62, Z84 or YE9 on the SPID should have the door jamb operating switches.
