Trouble Starting

90% of the time my truck starts up just fine. Then every once in a while I will turn the key and it sounds like the starter motor is running but it doesn't turn the motor. Whats the deal? The starter isn't even a year old yet.

Sounds like your starter bendix is getting bad. It's the little cylinder looking thing attached to the starter that your wires hook to, it engages the starter.

I went through 3 reman. starters before I finally got a good 1 u didn't say if it was a reman. or not just thought I would let u know what happened 2 me.I told them to check it before I took it and put it on and they did and when I would put them on ech 1 had a different problem. But I would sure check out what the others said above before I took it out.

This is my 2nd reman since April of 01. The one that was on the truck when work begun on it was real tight running and turned it over real slow. The second one made terrible noises and only got worse and when they tested it it blew the circuit on their machine at NAPA. This 3rd one had been OK so far. May I should just get a brand new one next time from O'Reillys or something.

Also follow the shim procedure. I had a similar problem and messed around with shims until the first starter quit working. I followed their procedure, ending up with two half shims on one side(bolt), gave it a whirl and it has worked flawlessly ever since. The starter should come with a shim adjustment pin that goes between the bendix gear and the fly wheel. And always have them check it electrically before you leave the store . Good luck
