Need opinion on possible purchase from you guys.
Greetings all, visitor from the 67-72 side of things. I currently have a 1970 c20 that I use to haul things around. Came across this on craigslist, but 73-87 isn't my area of expertise at all.
https://easternshore.craigslist.org/cto/5956190149.html Do you think it is worth $3500? The body seems nice, and the welds aren't horrid. Frame was straight. Motor is original, but started and I didn't see it smoking. The engine bay could use a cleaning. The bed floor is nice as the bed came off a newer model truck. Interior is fairly nice, but has a dashpad on top. It does need new tires ($734 for a set from tirerack). Beyond price, is there anything I should look for specifically that is a known problem. It has locking front hubs, and the transfer case and tranny could use a good scrub down with some degreaser. |

Seems to be a good deal. I would double check the parts he said he repaired as well as the corner under the battery tray for rust. Check fuse box make sure 30A isn't crammed into every slot just to get it running and probably wouldn't hurt to fire up heat and air. Not necessarily for hot or cold air but if it sounds normal and different fan speeds work properly. Just a few thoughts...

Thanks. Didnt think about checking the fuse box. I checked under the truck and the body panels all look good. The front fenders, inlcuding battery tray are all newer metal, but not factory GM. I think LMC stuff, which is fine. The engine fired up without issue. I'll ask the guy for a test drive and run the heat and check all the gauges. Wiring in these trucks isn't too bad, but probably more complicated than my 70.

Good idea to run the heat....When I finally ran the heat on mine after I brought it home I found a big mouse nest inside the flap box.

If the gas tank(s) have the plastic protective covers on the front, check the tanks for rust there. The covers often trapped gravel which then rubbed the anti-rust coating off the tanks. If dual tanks, check tank switch operation. Check the rubber fill hoses between the fill doors and tanks. If original, they are EOL.
Spare tire carrier still under the bed? Spare tire? |

No spare tire. Single tank. Bed is from a newer model truck so has the dual doors.
Things I still need to test are 4wd engagement, heat, check fuses. I know it needs tires. |

I'm partial to 4x4s but trust nothing in primer. Get under it.

Eastern Shore, huh?!?!?! There used to be a lot of nice trucks there back in the 80's (my wife is from Crisfield and I was stationed there) Look for any signs it got dunked in salt water or salt water marsh.....that is always a death sentence on wiring and any bearings it made its way into.... |

I think this truck may have been originally bought from a guy down near Crisfield. I was supposed to take a test drive this weekend but he never called me.

Yeah the primered body bothers me a little bit but if you could get it 3k to 3,500 range i would think hard about buying it unless i find something huge wrong with it.
