anyone know what this hole is for? heater box...

ideas on purpose of this hole?

That's where the duct tape goes. just kidding of course. I believe, it's really for the fan speed control gizmo. There may be an electrical plug that plugged into to it which connected it to the switch. The gizmo itself had a pair of resistance springs on it mounted to a cardboard looking backing. The springs get hot due to the resistance to electrical current so they placed them there in the airflow path to help them stay cooler. If nobody else chimes in I'll check mine tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure someone will.

I was going to say that in my post just did not want anyone taking it the wrong way ....... YES that is where the DUCT tape goes LOL ........ So to answer the OPs question "ideas on purpose of this hole?"... IT is a duct tape HOLDER
