Re: Bedliner on my 89
Green handle pump also indicates diesel. What do you got under the hood?

Re: Bedliner on my 89
6.2 diesel. Slow but close to 20 MPG. Very fun vehicle!
I see you have a 5.9 cummins...I was going to do that until I worked out the cost . . Still might do it someday. Great engine! You have an awesome setup. |

Re: Bedliner on my 89
I've had 6.2L diesels as well. Have you done anything to help out the performance? If not, they do respond quite nicely to a free flowing exhaust system and turning up the pump.
Surprised you're only getting close to 20 mpg but it is probably due to the non overdrive TH400 tranny, 3/4 ton 4x4 suspension (if that is what you've got). I was getting upper 20's in a 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton Suburban. The 6.2's were designed for excellent fuel economy. My Cummins is not quite as good but very close but it's in a lifted 3/4 ton 4x4 so it's like comparing apples to oranges. I like the Cummins setup and highly recommend it. Best way to do it is find the whole truck and swap things over.

Re: Bedliner on my 89
only thing I have really done is put in a K&N filter, I could tell a difference when climbing hills. Have not yet messed with turning up the pump.
Mine is also 3/4 ton, 4x4, 4" lift, TH400. I probably would not have put the lift on, but the previous owner did I left it on there. Tires are 315s. Someday I may do the Cummins swap. Having just bought the engine once before, I see that what you said about buying the whole truck makes sense. are you running a Dodge transmission? Alternatively, I may just put in a 4L80e transmission and find a good used or remanufactured 6.5 diesel. Not nearly as good as a Cummins, but a lot less complicated. |

Re: Bedliner on my 89
The transmission is out of a 2001 Dodge. It was only offered on 24 valve Cummins so it had to be purchased separately.
Not much reason to go to a 6.5 unless your 6.2 is worn out. There is hardly any difference in power unless turbocharged. The bottom ends were very susceptible to cracking around the webs and it's actually very difficult to find a crack free block. |

Re: Bedliner on my 89
So for a cummins conversion, you essentially put an entire dodge driveline (engine, trans, transfer case) into the chevy?
In addition to that, you need the aftermarket motor mounts that cost about $1k? Is that about right? All the parts (no labor), cost is about $6-7k, assuming you find a good motor for about $3000? |

That's about the average most people spend for parts for this conversion. Of course you can spend a lot more than that or possibly about half of that if you plan carefully.
