Engine Identification??
I have a straight-six in a 1961 Apache but, I can't determine if this is the original engine or, specifically which engine it is. Can anyone provide some guidance? All the "look-up" sites can identify the heads but, not the engine.

Judging by the side cover bolt location and the flat head screw in the valve cover it looks like the original 235 to me. Any chance of getting a block number? The one pictured I can't see to well...I only see a few numbers....there should be 6 and I only see 4.

It's more than likely a 235. A pic of the overall engine would help narrow it down. Plus more detailed casting or engine stamping numbers as TJ said.

Like tj and John said above it is more than likely a 235 just by looking at it, the only other truck engine that looks similar is the 261 (which has two bars above the starter so it's not a 261). If you look up the head number it is a 235.

If you look close enough, you can see the PBR tall boy can being used as a radiator overflow reservoir.

A resto-mod with a 235 would be even cooler anyhow. Those motors make for sweet eye candy with some old school speed parts on them. It would be better than a small block with regard to the nostalgia factor and sure to draw admirers when you show it off.

I had the same problem with my 235 because it is original to the truck and I couldn't swap it. So I decided to Resto-mod my truck with the original 235 and I put a T5 behind it. The original three speed wouldn't do it going down the highway and the 2 extra gears really helps it out. I get plenty of looks and wins at shows because of my engine and how it looks. People think its cool to see a tricked out six. There are plenty of cool stuff for these engines now just look around. If you have any questions please feel free to message me about any help on this engine because it can fight you when it's not set up right. They are different than the 230/250 motors. Here is a pic of my 235 with duel carbs. Good luck!

I agree, keep the 235. Neat motor with plenty of torque. Great candidate for some old school hotrod parts.
