Need Advice on Steering Column Problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I loosened my steering column enough to slide the shaft out to change the lower bearing. I got the shaft out and replaced the adjusting ring, bearing and spring. I'm now trying to put it back together and it's like it's too long now. I can't get the column to go back where it was so I can bolt it back in. Any thoughts on this?

What year is your truck? Tilt or non tilt? Manual or automatic? It makes a difference.

It's a 1969 no tilt. It's a 4 on the floor but it may have been a converted 3 on the tree.

Pictures of the lower column would help. You didn't install the ring or bearing in upside down did you? Did you remove the upper shift collar at all?

I'm not sure what the upper shift collar is. The ring and bearing are in correctly.

The shift collar is the part that the shift lever would have fit into.

I did not take that off. I'll get a picture tomorrow and post it. I've given up for the night. This truck was pieced together from a couple different trucks by the PO so I don't know the entire history. The odd part is that it seemed to work fine before the lower bearing failed. I'll post tomorrow and thanks for the help.

I would say that if it worked before you have something put together wrong.
