Replace a speedmeter from the backside without pulling entire guage cluster out?
Does anybody know if you can pull just the speedo out the back and replace it with a new one without pulling the entire cluster out the front?

The cluster only takes a few minutes to pull out. The speedo is easy from there. You would probably go nuts with the cluster still in the dash.

You wanna talk hard? Go ahead and attempt that speedo replacement and report back. Hardest parts are: Dropping column a little (not all the way). Finding button on headlight switch. Disconnecting oil pressure gauge line.

Ok, thanks. Didn't know if it was just the cable and those two 3/8" bolts that you can see from the back holding it in. I guess there's more to the removal than meets the eye from the back?
thanks. |

Re: Replace a speedmeter from the backside without pulling entire guage cluster out?
Pull the gauge set. It took me less than ten minutes to pull one today at the swap meet. A 5/16" end wrench (if you have a oil pressure guage), a small Allen wrench for the wiper switch, the Phillips screw driver on my Gerber tool for the six bezel face screws.. Used the needle nose pliers on the Gerber to remove the escutcheons (wiper, headlight, and choke) and it was out. OK I will admit the speedometer cable was already gone and I was in a hurry to get it out before the price changed.
