Vin plate ?
I have torn into my truck and discovered that i am going to need a new cab on it, i was wondering if it is legal for me to take the vin plate off of my truck and swap the vin plates around so as to keep my truck like it is with all the vin info, and if so where would i be able to get the rivits to do that.

The rivets are available (see elsewhere for a link to one source).
As for legality, there is no way that anyone can prove it was done even IF it is illegal in your neck of the woods. This is an example of a law which weakens jurisprudence: obeying it does no good in this situation and could actually cause harm, its operation is of no consequence to anyone but YOU, and it is entirely unenforceable. Draw your own conclusions. . . .

Body shops get busted for it too.
The law varies on what state you are in. Some places won't let you remove it even if you plan to re-install it to the same vehicle. (as in for a proper paint job) You could probably be able to do it with the blessing of the DMV, but it would take so much b.s. red tape, that I would just do it and not tell anyone. |

As far as I understand it in Texas the VIN plate stays with the frame it matches. I was planning to do a cab swap and I called the tax office here in Victoria(for those out of state the local tax office deals with titles and vehicle registration) I was told to remove the VIN plate from the junk cab(the one being removed) it should stay with the truck either keep it in the glove box or replace the one on the new cab. I was told the frame is what the title identifies not body pieces. Now if you have a problem like me your title doesn't match the cab or the frame. I tried the local sheriffs office but they can't run the vin number for the public.
I need to get the right title so I can trade or sell my short bed for a long bed |

Just do what you have to do. ive owned so many of these trucks and have been pulled over by several cops in many states and still have yet to have any one cop EVER look at the vin plate in any 67-72 Chevy. Most of them are too stupid to know where they are. They think they are always on the driverside dash. When it isnt on the dash, they just say oh well and go on with the ticket or what ever it was that they wasted your time pulling you over. If you are in Oregon, most of the cops are A$$ hole$ and would never "ask" where the vin is and admit they are ignorant sob's. In Oregon there is 1 cop for every 3 drivers on the road. Ive been pulled over 4 times in 1 year so far (with only one BS ticket making me go to traffic school) and the other were seatbelt tickets which I have the "get out of jail free card" that exempts me from being strapped into anything with wheels on it.
Ive also been pulled over by the same guy twice. He got me 50 feet away from the dealer when test driving a new Yukon.. Last edited by Phillip Johnson; 10-24-2003 at 08:46 PM. |

the vin plate is off of my truck. its in there but its not attached. the title matches my parts truck frame. po put the vin off of the parts truck onto the 70. luckily he gave me the truck with the frame that is original to my title
