Another Door Locking Problem

So after 2 days farting around with the doors/window puzzle putting in a new anti rattle kit i have another issue. (truck =70 gmc c20)

The passenger side came out perfect. (its done)

The driver side is being fussy. i got the whole door done (anti rattle) (last night) and ready to put the door panal on in the morning. closed the door and went to lock it with the key and it wouldnt lock.

today i lubed everything up and tried to lock the door with the key and still no go.

the key wont lock the door even with the door open (however it will unlock the door open or closed.

The door does lock pushing the lock button down

prior to putting in the new anti rattle kit doors have always functioned as they should (pass side still does)

dont understand this and why the key wont lock the door even while door open.

(update) while the door rest against the door styker resting closed (not emergency lached or fully closed) just against the styker
the key will rotate both to lock and unlock

Hopeing someone can explain what might be going on
Thanks

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

I put electric door locks on by welding a plate onto the latch for the actuator and ran into your problem. It was many years ago but i remember going in and grinding down a pawl because it got in the way. I found it when i had the latch out of the truck, FULLY latched it closed to the second position. Look inside when you try to use the key lever and you will figure it out. It didn't take much to get it to work right. Good luck!

Are you talking about the little arm thats on the back of of the key lock?
that rotates up and down (lock - unlock door?)

it rotates freely with lock knob on door (locking and un locking)
try to lock with key and it doesnt move.

this part i dont really understand (what keeps it from rotating with only the key)

(Friday) update the prawl wont rotate with the key -like it used to normally)

all i did was put in a new anti rattle kit pass door came out good.

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

so coming in for the evening gave it one last shot

when i put pressure on lock knob and turn key at same time it will lock

its like the key is binding (only way i can explain the feeling)

locking the door (with knob) now is not smooth like it should be its like 2 stage so its catching on something and thats probably whats keeping the key from turning.

my pass door is perfect so i have somthing to compare to.

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

Does the triangle part of the window track go in the window channel also.
cant remember what it looked like after i pulled the door panal.
on mine it is nice and shiny like it rubs on the window channel felt.

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

update

went out started to roll window down and it stopped

noticed the very bottom of the window track (triangle shaped)
was caught on the locking rod of the lock knob

does this triangle peice push into the new window channal felt?

rolled window down then up closed the door and it locked perfectly with the key. multiable times.

that bottom piece of the window track has to be the issue but when the window is up all the way is not possible to see ware its resting.

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

That triangle thing is he window channel and it doesnt look right, appears to be bent, it would be very hard to bend it though.
Also it should always be in the rear window fuzzy channel which supports it being bent...

ok ill work on that (getting i in the channal may need to move the window back in the track a bit tho. thanks ill let you know how it goes

(10 mins later) its locking with key again
one question does the the window channel triangle part fully seat into the fuzzy or just ride along it?

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

You need new lower glass channel, that triangle should be flat and not have the bend in it at the bottom...

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

ok so got the window chanal in the felt guide the window goes up and down no problems.

still having issue with key locking door
sometimes it works and locks sometimes it doesnt.

its amazing how the stupiest little things can make you frustrated

key lock worked fine, put in new anti rattle kit key doesnt lock door.
this shouldnt be a rocket science fix. the anti rattle kit has nothing to do with the locks anyway.

im about to go insane

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

Noticed that the back glass guide ware the new felt is is completly removable- just means ill need to take glass out and wing window.

by doing this i could get a better veiw of the whole locking situation correct????

any ideas -once again this is what happend

1, both doors latch and lock fine always have
2, intalled new anti rattle kit
3, put pass side back together (everything works fine and no rattles ;-)
4, ran out of daylight on driver side (everything back together except door panal) went to lock up the truck and drivers side wont lock with the key now.

lubed everything up (door locks with key perfectly smooth-sometimes , locks sometimes with resistance (whobble key back and fourth) and most of the time doesn't lock

5, my current situation since tuesday (now saturday)
CALLING ALL TRUCK GODS PLEASE HELP

Re: Another Door Locking Problem

FIXED

had to bend the locking knob rod a little to allow everything to line up in the latch area
to be able to lock with the key.

must of knocked a little taking out window
