clicking until clutch slightly depressed

Just had the driveline serviced by a highly regarded transmission shop
- flywheel machined
- new pressure plate
- new clutch
- new u-joints
- new hanger bearing
- rebuilt rear end

Now has a clicking noise that corresponds with driveshaft RPM. In first gear faster than second; second faster than third, which leads me away from the speedo cable.

When I depress the clutch pedal as little as a half inch, the clicking stops completely. It will click at idle in neutral sometimes, but not always.

There's no vibration associated with the clicking. At this point, it's more of an annoyance.

Thanks in advance.

Re: clicking until clutch slightly depressed

Sounds like the throwout bearing. Was it replaced?

Could be the wrong throwout bearing also but it sounds like the throwout bearing is probably to blame. I would take it back to the shop and have them look at it.

Pilot bushing could also cause this.

yep! sometimes those roller bearing pilot bearings can get damaged whether they are used or brand new when installing the transmission incorrectly.

bearings are overkill and in most cases a rebuild kit will include a new BUSHING and not a bearing for very good reason

Re: clicking until clutch slightly depressed

clicking sound only or can you feel it in the clutch pedal, gear shifter, anywhere else?

proper clutch adjustment and freeplay?

proper release bearing for pressure plate type?

I was handed a diaphragm release bearing with a borg n beck pressure plate once in a 12" clutch setup..

more than clicked, clutch was nearly impossible to release but other similar scenarios may be the culprit..

either way sounds like a comeback and the garage owes you some rework..

good luck!

Re: clicking until clutch slightly depressed

1/ Worst case scenario from your description is the input shaft gear has a chipped tooth...they did put oil back in the tranny didnt they?

2/ The pressure plate release fingers are not all equal...one is a little higher than the rest...replace the pressure plate.

3/ It will not improve over time...it could point to a bad spring that could fail suddenly.

4/ Also, make sure the return spring is in place to pull the release bearing away from the fingers on the pressure plate.
