Suggestions for manual trans conversion
I have decided that since my truck will no longer be daily driven and more of a toy that I am gonna change it over from a Th400 to a stick. I want something thats gonna be good for drag racing but that I can still drive around town 10 miles a week or so. So what are some of you guys running in your trucks? Open to all suggestions as it wont be for a while til I do it.
Thanks, Adam

The richmond trans was not a cheap swap, but it sure is fun to drive! With 4.10 gears on a 28" tall tire, I can crusie 80mph @ 3000 rpms in 6th. The thing "dances" when the throttle is opened up too... I am still thinking about trying out my 3.40 gears, as with a 3.28 1st gear I should still have plenty of "giddyup"& will be able to cruise 65 mph @ 2000 rpms on the hyway. with the price of gas, a little more milage cant hurt. Good luck, crazyL

hehe the motor I have isint too bad I still have to get it dynoed but I'm 90% sure its over 450 hp its not 850 but its not slow thats for sure. would a stick be that much better for the track? I know it would be a lot funner Crazy L about how much did it cost and how much fab did you have to do?

Jegs & summit both have the trans for around $3000. to add to that, I have a Hays billet flywheel, & a Centerforce dual friction clutch set. All the parts /hardware was just a little shy of $4000. Im not running on the strip, so I dont have a scattersheild(just ran the stock bell. The trans is close enough to the same lenght as a 400 t(within a fraction of an inch), & takes a 400 slip yolk. I swapped from a 400 t, & didnt have any driveline mods. The mount is in a different spot as far as front to back, & also height. other than building a custom crossmember, it was a pretty straight foward swap. You may have a little mod to do on the floor pan (hump) in the shifter area, as the shifter does sit pretty high on the trans(my floor had been modified after a body drop), to fit the 400t that I ran for several yrs, so other than building a box to go aruond the shifter it all fit. I am running the stock clutch linkage, however it is modified to fit my eng setback, &the top rod has been moved to the left on the firewall to straighten the "push". it also has rod ends to make things work "slicker". I bet that 481 does run good! Good luck, crazyL
